Some artists make you want to immediately go home and start experimenting.

Revisiting the Chihuly installation at the Bellagio did exactly that for me. All that color, movement, texture, and scale still feels impossible in the best way.

It also brought back memories of the Chihuly inspired pieces we created years ago that were later published in the book, which remains one of those moments that still catches me off guard when I think about it.

I’ve always been fascinated by the way certain artists quietly change how you see materials, shape, and light long after you leave the exhibit.

What artist, place, or object has stayed with you and shaped the way you see things?

I may be the only person with a stairwell full of empty frames I can’t stop thinking about.

When an old frame catches my attention, I do not rush to make a decision. Sometimes the best thing you can do is live with it for a while...

The studio’s stairwell has become a holding place for frames I’m studying, considering, and waiting on the perfect piece to fill it. Each one has something to teach and stories left to tell.

Take a walk down the stairs with me and see what’s currently hanging in the studio. Make sure you stay to the end to see what happens when a painting finally finds a better match than the frame it arrived with. Then share this with that friend who always slows you down in antique shops.

Today we celebrate the anniversary of the world’s first international chess tournament was held in 1851 in London, which means people have apparently been gathering to dramatically stare at small objects on a table for much longer than I realized.

And since it also happens to be New Bee Wednesday, I suppose it’s only appropriate that today’s uploads involve their own version of strategy, instinct, sacrifice, and the occasional regrettable decision made under pressure.

The new Bees arrive at 10:30 EST. Set your alarms and may your moves be swift.

Every New Bee Wednesday has its fan favorites.

These are Garrett’s chef’s specials for tomorrow’s drop.

Which one gets your vote?

As promised… here’s the wall after it stopped being terrifying.

Thursday I showed you the idea…the thought behind the process. This time you can see how it slowly worked its way across 20 feet of blank, white wall at KMAC Museum.

A lot of Washi tape. A lot of shifting things an inch to the left and then right back where they started. And somewhere in the middle of all that, the pattern settled in and started feeling like it belonged. ➡️ Scroll all the way through the photos to see a video of the installation.

If you’re in Louisville, go see it in person. The scale changes everything. Share this with the friend you want to go see it with.

The scariest thing in the world might be a blank wall.

Before we show you how this installation came together at KMAC Museum, I thought you might enjoy seeing where the idea started.

I’ve been working on ideas that I thought might work on the 9’ x 20’ wall at KMAC Museum.

So when I saw the Phish show at the Sphere last week I thought, perfect, let’s go with this. (Photo 1)

That translated into a loose sketch. (Photo 2)

And with a little Washi tape and some large nods to the Japanese style of inlay that was adopted by the English and Americans in the 1870s, you see the results as they actualize at KMAC. (Photos 3 & 4)

So… a bit of nesting on Main Street in Louisville, Kentucky.

Stay tuned for part 2: Saturday I’ll show you how the wall finally came together. Share this with someone who loves seeing the process as much as the finished installation.

Some people celebrate World Bee Day with facts and conservation efforts. I apparently celebrate by releasing more Bees into the wild.

Finally. A holiday I’m actually qualified to host. A fresh swarm lands this morning at 10:30 EST for New Bee Wednesday.

Set your alarms and share this with your bee-loving friends so you can celebrate accordingly.

One good gilt frame will keep us occupied for quite a while.

Had enough from this one to create a small series of Bees, which feels a bit like getting every last story out of a good piece of material before sending it back into the world.

A few of these have already wandered off, but you’ll find several similar pieces in tomorrow’s uploads.

Tag the friend who would immediately start rearranging a wall to make room for one of these.
