TIDY TIP: Match the container to the category, not the category to the container.

It’s tempting to start an organizing project with the product – especially when there are so many fun options out there. (We’re not immune to a good looking bin either.) But we’ve found the best product choices come later in the process.

Edit what you no longer need and decide where it makes the most sense to put what you’re keeping. THEN choose the bin, basket, divider or other product solution that fits the contents, the space – and the way you actually use what’s in it.

Because when you buy the container first, you’re often left trying to make your stuff fit the solution. And no one needs to be negotiating with a basket. Good organizing works the other way around: find the solution that fits your stuff.

Because the best organized spaces don’t just look good – they work well, too.

PHIL AT WORK | OBSERVATION #4
Phil has been studying our methods closely, and today’s finding is pretty solid: The best organizing systems are intuitive.

Translation = Things should live where you naturally look for them, reach for them, and use them.

- If the mail always lands in the same spot, that’s data.
- If you consistently take something back to the “wrong” cabinet, that’s data too.
- And if you make coffee every morning, your mugs probably shouldn’t require a field trip across the kitchen.

We pay attention to those little patterns because they tell us a lot about how a home actually functions, not how someone thinks it should function.

Sometimes the solution is as simple as moving the coffee mugs next to the coffee maker. Sometimes it means rethinking an entire space around the way you naturally move through it.

Because when there’s an obvious, easy place for something to go, you’re a whole lot more likely to put it there.

Phil approves. And frankly, he’s a tough critic.

Yes, this is an actual before and after – we gave the photos a little artistic treatment because we wanted the focus to be less on what was in the closet and more on where things were placed.

Sometimes organizing a space isn’t about adding more product. In this closet, we worked primarily with what our client already had – moving some pieces and removing others.

By simply rethinking the layout and placement, we created better access, function, and flow.

Because sometimes the solution is making what you already have work better for you.

Small shift. Big difference.

There’s something about an upcoming change of season that makes a fresh start feel natural.

As you start thinking about swapping out the pillows on the porch, changing the wreath on the front door, switching up the placemats on the table or reaching for different serving pieces, it’s also a great time to take a fresh look at your home.

What’s working? What could function better? What’s been lingering on your to do list that you’re finally ready to tackle?

Maybe it’s a linen closet. Maybe it’s the kitchen, the storage room (where your seasonal decor lives) – or the whole house.

A new season is a natural opportunity to reset, reorganize, and make your home work better for the way you live.

And if you’re ready to feel a little lighter at home, Tidy Nest Professional Organizing is ready to help. We're currently booking into late September.

SEVERNA PARK, HAVE YOU SPOTTED THIS YET?

You may be familiar with Planet Aid’s yellow donation bins, but this is something a little different. Planet Aid’s newer, large-format Donation Center concept has made its way to Park Plaza in Severna Park, toward the B&A Boulevard side of the shopping center.

It’s another convenient local option for giving unwanted clothing and shoes a second life – helping keep textiles in use longer and out of landfills while supporting Planet Aid’s community programs.

Tidy Tip: Always keep a donation bag going at home. When you come across something you no longer wear or need, add it to the bag. Knowing exactly where those items can go makes letting go that much easier.

And when you organize with Tidy Nest, you don’t even have to make the donation run – we take care of getting what goes where it needs to go, too.

Don’t organize what you don’t need.

Before reaching for the bins, baskets and labels, start by deciding what actually deserves a place in your home. The goal isn’t to find better ways to store more stuff.

Less to organize means less to manage, easier-to-maintain systems, and more room for the things you actually use and love.

Edit first. Organize second.

Our client was ready to reclaim this office and catchall space and give it a new purpose: a bedroom for one of her kids.

We sorted, edited and organized the space, clearing out what no longer belonged and creating a calm, functional bedroom with room to settle in.

It’s a great reminder that home organizing isn’t always about making the space you have work better. Sometimes it’s about reimagining how your home can work better for the way your family lives now.

Have a room that’s ready for its next chapter? We’d love to help.

Give the books you no longer need a new purpose.

At Tidy Nest Professional Organizing, we're big believers that letting go is a whole lot easier when you know the things you no longer need can be put to good use.

AAUW Anne Arundel County Branch's Donate 2 Educate book collection is a wonderful opportunity to do just that, and we're happy to help spread the word!

Good, clean used books are being collected for their 2026 Book Sale, with proceeds supporting scholarships for women in Anne Arundel County.

So, take a look at your shelves, pack up the books you're ready to donate, and help support a great cause right here in our community.
