Guillain-Barre Syndrome ("GBS"): A rare disorder in which the body's immune system attacks the nerves. These sensations can quickly spread, often paralyzing the entire body. Recovery from GBS is very slow and the acronym GBS is often said to stand for "Getting Better Slowly." For this reason, GBS survivors have adopted the turtle as their mascot. ates will be used to purchase materials to create stuffed turtles for pediatric patients with GBS. It is my hope that the children and their families will find hope and encouragement -- and maybe a smile -- in knowing that the turtle that they received was made by someone who battled this devastating illness and recovered.

The Duke Blue Devils mascot originated in the early 1920s, inspired by the French World War I soldiers known as les Diables Bleus (the Blue Devils).
