How often are you replacing bulbs?

One of the biggest frustrations we hear from homeowners:

“Another light is out.”

Older halogen landscape lighting systems can require ongoing bulb replacements and maintenance. Over time, you can find yourself chasing outages around the property just to keep the system looking the way it should.

High-quality LED lighting systems can last tens of thousands of hours, helping reduce:

✔ Burned-out bulbs
✔ Service calls
✔ Inconsistent lighting across your property

Less maintenance. Better performance. More time enjoying your outdoor spaces.

If you’re maintaining an older halogen system, we took a closer look at the benefits of upgrading to LED outdoor lighting: https://buff.ly/YliXNT6

Every outdoor lighting proposal is not created equal.

Two companies can look at the same home and recommend completely different lighting systems.

The biggest difference usually isn't the fixtures.

It's the design.

Long before installation begins, a professional lighting designer is thinking about questions like:
✔ How will the home look from the street?
✔ Which architectural details deserve attention?
✔ Where will guests naturally focus their eyes?
✔ How can we create depth instead of flat, uniform lighting?
✔ How do we minimize glare while maximizing visual impact?
✔ How will the lighting evolve as the landscape matures?

That's exactly why we create custom lighting renderings before installation. They allow homeowners to visualize the design, refine the plan, and move forward with confidence before a single fixture is installed.

Great outdoor lighting isn't about adding more light. It's about creating the right light in the right places.

📞 Schedule a personalized design consultation before comparing proposals and discover what a custom lighting plan can do for your home.

𝗪𝗲’𝗿𝗲 𝗲𝘅𝗰𝗶𝘁𝗲𝗱 𝘁𝗼 𝘀𝗲𝗲 𝗟𝗼𝘂𝗱𝗼𝘂𝗻 𝗟𝗶𝗴𝗵𝘁𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗳𝗲𝗮𝘁𝘂𝗿𝗲𝗱 𝗶𝗻 𝗟𝗶𝘃𝗶𝗻𝗴𝗲𝘁𝗰.

Garrett recently shared his perspective for a Livingetc feature on how professional designers approach garden lighting and they highlighted one of our favorite techniques: moonlighting.

Moonlighting involves placing fixtures high within mature trees and directing light downward through the canopy. The branches and leaves naturally break up the light, creating soft, irregular shadows across lawns, pathways, and planting beds.

As Garrett explained in the article: “When it is done properly, you are less aware of the light fixture and more aware of the atmosphere it creates.”

That idea captures a lot of how we approach outdoor lighting. The best results aren’t necessarily the brightest or most obvious. They’re the ones that feel like they belong in the landscape.

Thanks to Livingetc for including Garrett’s perspective and one of our Northern Virginia projects in the feature.

💡 Is your outdoor lighting system working harder than it needs to?

Many older systems still technically work — but that doesn’t mean they’re working efficiently.

Halogen systems can mean higher energy use, frequent bulb replacements, wasted light, and limited control over how your property looks after dark.

A professionally designed LED upgrade can improve much more than efficiency. It can provide better light placement, longer-lasting components, smart controls, improved visibility around your property, and fewer maintenance headaches over time.

And in many cases, upgrading doesn’t mean starting from scratch. Portions of your existing lighting infrastructure may be able to stay in place.

Our infographic breaks down the differences at a glance, and our latest blog goes deeper into what homeowners should know before making the switch.

Colonial homes already have a strong architectural identity. Good lighting should work with it.

On this Leesburg home, the goal was to bring out the architecture after dark without making every surface equally bright.

Light along the brick façade reveals its texture and warm color. The roofline and dormers remain visible, while the mature landscaping adds another layer of depth around the home.

Restraint matters with this style of architecture. Too much light can flatten the façade and compete with the symmetry and details that give a Colonial home its character.

We recently took a deeper look at how we approach lighting Colonial homes, including fixture placement, beam spread, and color temperature.

Or sometimes you just move the camera at exactly the wrong moment. 😂

This Leesburg patio uses light from multiple directions to bring depth to the landscape after dark. Uplighting draws attention to the trunks and canopy, while light from above reaches through the branches and softly illuminates the plantings and patio below.

The result is a backyard that still feels like a backyard at night, with the mature trees and landscaping providing the character.

The first photo, though? We might frame that one.

Remember those concrete pours we recently shared? Here’s the finished installation.

These custom bollard lights are now installed throughout this Ashburn backyard, and they completely change the space after dark.

Placed around the lawn, pool, garden beds, and outdoor gathering spaces, the fixtures become part of the landscape design themselves. Their intricate cutouts cast dramatic patterns across the ground while providing functional illumination throughout the property.

Repeating the design across the space also creates a visual rhythm that connects different areas of the backyard after dark.

This is one of the reasons we love incorporating distinctive fixtures into a custom outdoor lighting plan. Sometimes the fixture deserves to be seen.

Hiring an outdoor lighting company is a decision you'll live with every evening after the sun goes down.

A well-designed system should enhance your home's architecture, improve safety, and continue performing beautifully for years—not just look impressive on installation day.

That's why it's worth looking beyond the proposal itself. The questions a company asks, how they explain their recommendations, and the way they approach your project can tell you just as much as the final price.

Our checklist highlights a few qualities we believe every homeowner should look for before making an investment.

Most homeowners think bollard lights are simply pathway lights.

In reality, they're one of the most versatile tools in professional landscape lighting design.

When thoughtfully placed, bollards can:
✔ Improve visibility along walkways and driveways
✔ Help guests navigate your property safely
✔ Define transitions between outdoor spaces
✔ Add architectural interest during the day
✔ Create comfortable, glare-controlled lighting after dark

The difference isn't simply adding more fixtures; it's selecting the right fixture, spacing, beam pattern, and color temperature for your property.

That's exactly what we design every day throughout Loudoun County and Fairfax County.

Save this guide for future inspiration, and if you're planning an outdoor lighting project, we'd love to help.
