🍊 The History Behind the Plates
The Accidental Discovery
In 1915, Raleigh artists Jacques and Juliana Busbee spotted a striking, bright orange pie dish at a North Carolina county fair. Smitten by the color, they traced its origins to the clay beds of Seagrove, NC, where local potters were practicing a dying tradition of utilitarian folk pottery. To save the craft, the Busbees founded Jugtown Pottery in 1917.
The Folded Edge Design
To market the pottery to the world, Juliana opened a craft shop in Greenwich Village, New York. Jacques stayed behind to design new styles with local master potters like Ben Owen. Together, they created this iconic "altered" or folded square-edge rim—intentionally folding the damp circular clay edges inward by hand on the wheel to bridge rustic Southern earthenware with sleek, modern Art Deco tastes.
The Circular Stamp
Flip these pieces over, and you will find the signature circular "Jugtown Ware" stamp pressed into the clay. Introduced around 1922 to guarantee authenticity to high-society buyers, this mark cemented Jugtown Pottery as one of America’s most historic and highly collected folk art hubs.

Fred Beane’s Old House Pottery available at The Cinder Block Shop. I will be looking for more of his beautiful work!

Fred Beane (July 18, 1923 – September 30, 2014) was a highly respected master potter and a landmark figure in the historic Seagrove, North Carolina pottery hub. He owned and operated Old House Pottery, where he produced traditional Southern folk art and functional stoneware.

Fred Beane (July 18, 1923 – September 30, 2014) was a highly respected master potter and a landmark figure in the historic Seagrove, North Carolina pottery hub. He owned and operated Old House Pottery, where he produced traditional Southern folk art and functional stoneware.
🏆 Career Highlights & AwardsEarly Apprenticeship: He began throwing clay at just 12 years old under the instruction of regional legend Jim Teague.
Potter of the Year: Beane was officially recognized as Seagrove's Master Potter of the Year in 1992.
Festival Feature: He served as the prestigious Featured Master Potter at the annual Seagrove Pottery Festival in 2003.
Media Recognition: His regional fame led him to be featured on Fox 8’s popular folk history segment, “Roy’s Folks”.
The Area's Eldest Artisan: He was celebrated as the oldest active working potter in the Seagrove area, famously throwing beautiful pieces at his wheel until he was 90 years old.🏺
What He Was Known For
Classic Silhouette Forms: He was a master of traditional regional shapes, most notably high-handled Rebekah pitchers, decorative birdhouses, butter churns, and custom serving dishes.
Signature Glazes: His pieces are immediately identifiable by their heavy, glassy, and vibrant color finishes—particularly his brilliant cobalt blue.
Folk Art Specialties: He was highly collectible for classic Southern folk traditions, including expressive face jugs, functional clay bean ladles, and special cornbread pans.
