The Korean sapsaree has finally joined the ranks!

Sapsalgae 삽살개, affectionately called sapasree 삽사리/sapsali 삽살이 and occasionally shortened to sapsal 삽살, is an indigenous dog (토종개) from South Korea. The sapsaree's literal name means to chase or ward off evil spirits, and as such, sapsarees are often seen as guardians or protectors that bring good luck and peace.

Sapsarees have lived in South Korea for thousands of years, but exactly how long is unknown. The history of sapsarees are largely known through oral stories, folktales, paintings, songs, and writings. Potential evidence suggests they have been around since at least the Silla Dynasty (57 BCE – 935 CE), and for some time, they were typically kept by royalty. They were largely kept as companions, but they were sometimes used as military dogs (specifics of both of these purposes are unknown but likely along the lines of a general purpose companion, watch dog, and hunter). It wasn't until the Koryo Dynasty (918–1392) that commoners started owning sapsarees

As sapsarees have always been companions, their strength comes from their qualities and behavior with their family. They are most well known for their loyalty and loving nature, but they are also characteristically gentle, obedient, and sociable within their circle. They are said to love with their whole body with their people. They are not known to be a vocal breed, but they are very watchful and may alert bark at strangers. In doing so, they are characteristically fearless and loud. As current priority is toward health and genetic diversity, specific traits on individuals are less selected for or against. As such, traits like prey drive, energy level, food drive, toy drive, and social friendliness with other dogs may vary. Sapsarees are a smart breed, but they are not bred specifically for work or sport, and sometimes motivating them can take time. Uniquely without being selected for, sapsarees generally seem to enjoy water and are generally very clean dogs (ie, not crate dirty and may hold their bladder for long periods). Weak character and nervousness is a fault, and excessive aggressiveness is a disqualifying fault.

Appearance-wise, sapsarees are known for their rectangular shape, large head, large ankles, and shaggy (furnished) fur. Combined with their watchful nature, they are sometimes called "lion dogs" but generally have a amiable appearance. While they are known for their shaggy fur, approximately 3% of sapsarees have what is called "short fur" (unfurnished). In Korean, the short hair sapsarees are sometimes called Goryegae 고려개 (a term coined by Professor Ha), but they are genetically the same. In Korea, sapsarees are considered large dogs. However, they are generally a medium-sized dog at about 52-63 cm tall and 20-30 kg (20-24 in tall and 44-66 lb). They have floppy ears and are generally moderate and well balanced dogs in all aspects due to lack of specific breed purpose and trait selection. Because of their near extinction, priority has been placed on health and genetic diversity. While some selection toward appearance is considered, there remains some variation in appearance in regards to subtleties and specifics. Per the foundation, sapsarees are considered blue or yellow, or variations of blue or yellow, or spotted. Genetically, sapsarees appear to be able to be black, brown/liver, blue, various intensities of red (including a very light cream), and piebald. Various markings and variations appear as sable, agouti, masks, minor ticking on noses and paws (more ticking may be noted on piebald dogs), tan point, and residual white on the chest, paws, and nose. Erect ears are a disqualifying fault.

Thank you Chloe Smith for the breed information!

I am so excited to represent over 20 vulnerable breeds in the dog deck! Featured here is the Otterhound, just a few years ago their numbers drop to 500 individuals. I’m excited to say the breed is now on the mend!

The nine of ❤️
Features a REDBONE COONHOUND

Years ago, most c**n hunters who owned a red dog of unknown ancestry, but proven ability in tracking and treeing racc**ns, called his dog a “Redbone”. Then a few serious breeders who were devoted both to the breed and the sport began a campaign of selective breeding to produce a hound with the necessary characteristics to make a superior c**nhound that would breed true to type in color and conformation.

As is the case with most of the other c**nhound breeds, the ancestors of the Redbone were foxhounds. A Bloodhound cross is said to have been made, and it’s also said that the blood of the Irish hounds was introduced later. This latter cross is said to account for the white chest and feet markings which still occasionally show up in Redbone pups today.

The first dogs were commonly called “Saddlebacks”. The background color was red, and most of them possessed black saddle markings. By selective breeding, the black saddle was bred out and the solid red dogs became known as Redbone Coonhounds.

The Redbone was the second c**nhound breed to be registered with UKC, the first one being registered in 1902, two years after the American Black & Tan. Today, of the seven c**nhound breeds, the Redbone is probably the most uniform as to type and size. They are c**n hunting specialists but also proficient in trailing and treeing bear, cougar and bobcat. Often times, when used on big game, Redbones are hunted in packs.

Defining features.
The Redbone's most defining feature is its striking solid red coat. I get countless comments no matter if the dog I have is darker in shade or lighter. "Their body should look like it's carved from a block of mahogany." And this is what I envision when I see Redbones in front of me. They also have a beautiful voice that is distinctive and unmistakable.

Temperament
They are a people oriented breed that wants to be a part of your everyday life. They are very smart and versatile but, not always the easiest to train. They work for you because they want to not because you want them to. I find they are adaptable to a variety of lifestyles and can live almost anywhere with the right owner. They are an interesting combination of sensitive and tough and you have to be an adaptive trainer to get the most out of them. They do have a hunt drive and that is challenging for some owners. They are bred to be independent hunters, find game by scent, and "tree" the animal or hold at bay until the hunter arrives.

I think they are very underrated as a dog breed, they overall have good health and are easy to care for. They do need a routine and rules as they like to test boundaries, but they take well to training and excel at a variety of sports.

The Three of ♠️
Features a miniature XOLOITZCUINTLI

The Xoloitzcuintli is an ancient, landrace dog native to North America in what is modern day Mexico and surrounding regions. Art and word of mouth suggests the breed is at least 3,000 years old, and have been valuable companions to the native peoples in each culture that has inhabited the region. They are known to be household companions, alert village watch dogs and early warning systems, and to hold religious significance. Believed by the Aztecs to be the offspring or servants of the god of the underworld, Xolotl, Xoloitzcuintli were often sacrificed for sacred reasons. Believed to assist souls in crossing over to Mictlan, they were often laid to rest alongside people to help them in the afterlife.

The race nearly went extinct due to Spanish colonization and the introduction of European dogs to the region. Thankfully being adapted to the land meant that Xoloitzcuintli were able to maintain small populations all over Mexico both in the wilderness and in remote villages, so the breed, much like that Nahuatl peoples to whom they are sacred, were able to persist.

I want to start off by saying THANK YOU to everyone who bought cards and customs from the recent release! All cards are now shipped and on the way!

I just received the first samples from our printing company for t-shirts and stickers. I am so excited to release these to you.

I usually don’t post designs I make for myself, but this weekend my bred-by Zuma is competing at the Kentuckiana Cluster and I’ll be wearing his team shirt so I’m easy to spot. If anyone wants to stop by and talk about their breed I would love to post a series of videos about breed education!

*ps he won breed today out of 50+ BCs so if your attending, we would appreciate all the support in groups!
