Discover a forgotten slice of life with ART NEWS magazine - est. 1902.

At the Loft, we have issues that were originally published in the 1940s - a decade in which the rights of art and artists were being debated heatedly in the U.S. Each issue is invaluable for any artist or history buff!

How long have you been working at the Loft?

Three months!

How would you describe yourself as an artist?:

I am a wildlife artist, focusing on the form and personality in nature.

What inspired this piece?

I adore weasels, so I decided to paint this mink with my new Holbein watercolors. They are so fluid and saturated in pigment!

Gelly Roll vs. Sharpie!

These two drawing utensils are arguably some of the most famous when one wants to get a solid, precise line. We're here today to settle the argument once and for all - which is better? Welcome to the .
..

Some consider lining to be the most important step in techniques that require it. There are about as many lining tools as stars in the sky, and it can be hard to choose! We've found that many people debate the difference between the Gelly Roll gel pen and the classic Sharpie. We're here to tell you which is best for which art process.

The major defining difference between the two are what they make their mark with! Sharpies are use dye, while the Gelly Roll pens use pigment. This leads to Sharpies fading over time (and they are not light-fast) whereas a Gelly Roll will stay clear and true-to-color for years. Sharpies are perfect for sketching out bold lines and clear concepts, but for final, detailed work a Gelly Roll might serve you better.

GOLDEN has introduced new yellows! They are replacing Hansa Yellow Medium and Light with Benzimidazolone Yellow Medium and Light in order to improve the light-fastness.
..

Golden continuously tests their products to make sure they provide the best materials possible. Recent tests suggested that the pigments used in the Hansa formulations no longer meet ASTM (American Society for Testing and Materials) standards for light-fastness. Instead of shrugging their shoulders, Golden got to work making a better yellow. Today, we enjoy the benefits of their hard work - an archival quality, long lasting, highly pigmented paint.

This book is better than magic - it's science. The featured page shows the progress of James Vanreusel in just five days through following the techniques outlined in this book. In Drawing on the Right Side of the Brain, Betty Edwards explains how to improve your art skills by improving the artist's "eye."
..

It is widely agreed that the brain has two main "modes": analytical and creative. While many activities use a combination of the two, drawing is a process that draws almost exclusively on the creative and intuitive right side. Drawing on the Right Side of the Brain by Betty Edwards teaches drawing skills in a way that quiets the analytical mind which can often get in the way of putting pen to paper. Seen as an essential work in the field, this book is necessary for any illustrative artist and we always make a point of keeping it in stock!
