As a small business owner, one thing many people don’t realize is that Louisiana businesses are taxed on inventory sitting in warehouses — on top of the other taxes businesses already pay.
That means candle vessels, fragrance oils, packaging, detergent bottles, and supplies sitting on our shelves can increase our tax burden before they ever generate revenue.
At a time when businesses are already navigating rising shipping costs, tariffs, higher supply expenses, and increased operating costs, this tax makes growth even harder.
Growth requires inventory.
Busy seasons require inventory.
Expansion requires inventory.
Buying local requires inventory.
If we truly want to support local businesses, we have to create an environment where they can grow, hire, invest, and compete — not penalize them for carrying the inventory needed to do it.
That would be like paying taxes every year on the items sitting in your pantry, closets, or garage before you even used them.
Eliminating or reducing the inventory tax would allow small businesses to reinvest more money back into employees, operations, expansion, and the local communities they serve every day.
