Design Case Study: Bold Blue Oasis 🛋️✨

The truth is, most people don’t actually need a full renovation. You have the vision, you just need help pulling the threads together!

My clients went bold with this deep blue paint, but they hit a wall when it came to the layout. This is a massive entertainment space designed for a bar, a theater, and hosting a crowd.

The Transformation Strategy:
• Smart Space Planning: We needed a massive sectional, but I didn’t want to block the front door. The solution? A bumper sectional. It defines the lounge area while keeping the entry flow open and airy.

• The Power of Zoning: We carved out functional “pockets”—a table for board games by the bar and a secondary conversation nook. Everyone has a spot, but the layout ensures nobody misses a second of the game or movie.

• Mastering the “Moody” Vibe: We leaned into a monochromatic blue base but layered in burgundies and mauves for contrast. Using different hues of the same colors is my secret weapon for adding depth without the room feeling flat.

The Final Result: Zoned, layered, and officially party-ready. 🥂

Be honest—would you ever go this bold with a deep blue? Let me know in the comments! 👇

Stop hoarding pins and start actually living in them. 🏠
We’ve all been there: 4,000+ pins in a “Dream Home” board, but the living room still feels like a random collection of Facebook Marketplace finds.

The secret? Your Pinterest isn’t a wishlist—it’s a data set. You have to audit the “repeat offenders.” If every third pin has a velvet sofa or a gallery wall, that’s your non-negotiable.

Stop searching for “vibes” and start searching for “specs” (materials, finishes, textures). That’s how you bridge the gap between scrolling and styling.

Go look at your most recent 10 pins. What’s the common denominator? Let me know below! 👇

Stop trying to pick just one “vibe.” 🏡✨
I hear it from almost every client: “I like a bit of this and a bit of that, but I have no idea how to make them work together.” The secret to a home that feels cohesive (and not messy) is what I call

The Thread. 🧵

Pick one single element—a specific color, a wood tone, or even a shape—and let it “travel” through every room. It’s the visual repetition that connects your entire house.

The 80/20 Rule

If you’re worried about it looking cluttered, stick to this:
• 80% Foundation: Your main style (like Modern Minimalism).
• 20% Flair: Your “personality” pieces (like those vintage finds you love).

🌟 PRO TIP: The “Bridge” Item
When two pieces feel like they’re from different worlds—like a sleek modern sofa and a very traditional rug—find a Bridge.

What two styles are you trying to mix? Tell me below and I’ll help you find your “Bridge!” 👇

Designing a long, narrow living room is basically a giant game of Tetris. My client came to me with the goal to turn one awkward, “runway” space into a functional family hub for movie nights, board games, and hosting.

The game plan:

• Zone it out: We kept the sectional in its prime spot for the TV, but added two swivel chairs so you can pivot from the screen to the conversation in a second. 🔄

• The Nook: We utilized every square inch by tucked a dedicated game table by the window. No more unused dead space!

• The “Ugly” Stuff: We custom-fit a corner cabinet and a low console to hide all those messy cables that usually ruin a vibe. 🔌✨

• The Aesthetic: We leaned hard into her Pinterest-inspired love for blue and bold pattern mixing. We kept the original 1920s wood trim everywhere else, but gave the fireplace a moody, dark blue update to anchor the room.

The result? A space that feels curated, FUN, cozy, and actually works for a busy family. 💙

You’re standing in the furniture store thinking the “safe” choice is the matching set. But if you want your home to feel curated, layered, and high-end, you have to break the rules and start mixing.

The secret isn’t matching the grain; it’s matching the vibe.

Here is the cheat sheet to mixing wood tones like a pro:

1️⃣ Find your Anchor: Identify the dominant wood (flooring or that big cabinet).
2️⃣ Temperature Check: Keep your undertones consistent. If your floors are cool, keep your accents cool!
3️⃣ The 60/30/10 Rule: Balance is everything. Don’t give every wood tone equal “air time.”

✨ BONUS DESIGNER TIP: If you’re worried two wood tones are “clashing” or the transition feels too harsh (like a dark oak table on light maple floors), use a rug as a buffer. A textured rug acts as a visual bridge, breaking up the wood-on-wood contact and making the contrast look sophisticated rather than accidental.

Your home should look like it evolved over time, not like it was delivered in one box on a Tuesday.

Which wood tone is dominant in your home?
Let’s troubleshoot your pairings in the comments! 👇

“Inches matter.”

And in interior design… they really matter.

In Chapter Two of Beginnings of Interior Environments, we start talking about the science behind space planning — the principles that explain why a room feels comfortable… or why something just feels off.

We learn about proxemics, which is the study of personal space. Humans naturally maintain invisible “bubbles” around themselves, and when design ignores that — like restaurant tables that are way too close together — people feel uncomfortable, even if they can’t explain why.

Then there’s anthropometrics, which looks at actual human body dimensions. Things like counter heights, doorway widths, reach ranges, and clearances aren’t random — they’re based on data about how bodies move through space.

We also study ergonomics, which focuses on how environments support the body. A well-designed workspace reduces strain, improves posture, and makes everyday tasks easier and more efficient.

And finally there’s environmental psychology, which explores how spaces influence how we think and feel. Natural light can improve mood and productivity. Ceiling height can influence creativity or focus. Even acoustics can impact stress levels.

So while interior design often gets reduced to aesthetics, the reality is that a lot of what we do is rooted in understanding human behavior and human biology.

Because small spatial decisions can create very big human reactions.

Inches matter.

And that’s the science behind space planning.

Color sets the mood of a room before you even say a word.

Want calm and restful? Go for soft blues or muted greens — they create a peaceful, balanced feel that’s perfect for bedrooms.

Want energizing and social? Warm yellows and touches of orange bring warmth, positivity, and great conversation energy into kitchens and dining spaces.

Need focused and productive? Blue-green tones help support clarity and steady concentration, making them ideal for offices or study areas.

The right color can change how the space feels.
