To let go of an ex:
Take three photos of them. Mark an X on the first and say "you are out of my mind". An X on the second, "our time is over". An X on the third, "you are out of my heart". Burn all three in a black candle and blow the ashes into the wind.

Three sprays of your perfume:
Yours, the one you wear when you want to be noticed, not just any bottle in the house. Three sprays, from a distance, without soaking it. The scent is your signature: it is what tells the working whose paper this is, and that is why you never use a borrowed perfume.

WASH YOUR DOOR KEYS
Wash your keys beneath running water after a difficult day.
Clear away the energy of every place you have been before returning home.

Your magic is only as strong as your ability to believe in it.

To quit drinking:
Take the last bottle you have left and fill a small glass seven times, drinking only half of each one. What's left you collect in a jar with a lid. On a Wednesday under a waning moon, bury the jar far from your house and come back a different way than you came.

To quit smoking:
Set aside the last seven ci******es and smoke only half of each.
Keep the stubs in a matchbox.
On a Wednesday under a waning moon, bury the box far from your house and never go back there.

To let go of an ex:
Take a piece of clothing you wore when you were still with them and wash it by hand with coarse salt, no soap at all. Hang it inside out at night and bring it in before the sun comes up. Next time you put it on, you don't feel anything anymore.

Knocking on wood three times:
You mention something good that hasn't happened yet and your hand goes looking for the table on its own, before you decide anything at all. The knock buries the word: said out loud it is left loose in the air, at the mercy of any ear that catches it, and wood, which was once a living tree, holds down what your mouth let out too early. Knock three times with your knuckles, on real wood (a table, a door frame, a broom handle), and repeat under your breath, only for yourself, the thing you want left standing. Glass, formica and laminate hold nothing, and more than three knocks thins the intention instead of strengthening it, which is the mistake of whoever keeps drumming through the rest of the conversation.

The magnet inside your right shoe:
Slip a small flat magnet, one of those little round ones that vanish under your thumb, into your right shoe, underneath the insole, before you go out to settle anything that matters. With the shoe still in your hand, say it low: "wherever I walk, let me draw what I want." Only the right one, which is the foot that opens the way, and never both at once: a magnet on both sides pulls without choosing, and what you never asked for comes along with it.

The green candle on Thursday:

Every Thursday, run a thread of honey

along the green candle from the base up

to the wick, which is the direction that

draws things in, and dust ground cinnamon

over the honey. Light it on a white saucer,

in a corner where nobody will knock into

it, and let it burn until it goes out on its

own. Don't blow it out, don't pinch it with

your fingers and don't save the stub for

the following week: whatever is left goes

out with the rubbish the next day, and the

Thursday coming asks for a new candle.

Thursday is the day of plenty, and a green

candle on it is an open road to prosperity.
