Before we chose a single fabric, we learned what this client keeps close. French posters, collected art, pieces carried from previous homes. The panel molding, the color, the built-ins all followed from what already mattered to them.

The materials set the palette, and autumn finished it. Reclaimed beams overhead, a stone fireplace floor to ceiling, plaster walls that hold the late light. Outside, the lake and the hillside shift from green to gold.

I think everybody that walks through the front door feels it immediately. The low ceilings, the rug on the floor, the upholstery. Just the collection of meaningful things. To me, that's what a home is. It should be a feeling.

Sometimes a project begins with a floor plan or a site line. This one began with a painting.

An original Todd Murphy hangs in the stairwell. A white stag on a black ground, still and quiet, its antlers replaced by real bare branches that climb the wall and reach toward the ceiling. It is the kind of piece that changes a room. For us, it changed the entire home.

Everything stemmed from that stag. The color palette for the whole home, the layered textures, every collaboration with the artisans and makers who shaped these rooms. It all traced back to that single image.

One painting set the tone. Our job was to let every room answer it.
