Here's the rule:
Neutral body color? Go bold on the door — deep red, forest green, navy.
Bold or busy body? Go classic — crisp black or a clean white.

Always match your hardware finish to your fixtures and house numbers. Consistency isn't optional.

And if your door has a brass half-moon window from 1991, you know what to do. 😅

It's usually not the paint that's missing: It's the details. This house does a great job of showing some of the most subtle but most important exterior design details.

House numbers: matte black or brushed brass, clean modern font, well-lit at night

Door handle and deadbolt: get a matching set, not two separate finishes

Porch light: proportional to the door, right finish, not builder grade

Address style: tiny detail, massive refinement signal

🔥 Hot take: bad shutters are worse than no shutters. 🔥

The shutters that work: sized correctly to the window, hung flush against the house, contrasting color.

The shutters that don't: tiny plastic ones floating in space three inches from the window, matching the body color exactly, accomplishing absolutely nothing.

When you do want shutters: board-and-batten or flat-panel, deep, contrasting color, hung flush. Intentional.

Here's something we don't talk about enough: your landscaping and your home's exterior need to be in conversation with each other. 🌿

Because you can have the most beautiful paint color in the world, and overgrown, mismatched landscaping will undercut it every single time.

A few things we always look at:

Foundation plantings: they should frame the home, not hide it. Keep them trimmed and intentional.

Symmetry at the entry: two matching planters or topiaries flanking the front door creates instant polish.

Color coordination: warm-toned homes love warm-toned plantings (rust, terracotta, gold). Cool homes love greens, whites, and blues.

A clear path — your walkway should invite people in, not make them guess where the door is.

The outside of your home is the whole picture. We look at all of it. 💛
