In 1989 Christos and Kathy Saccoupolis invited 5 Mississippi State Architecture students, including myself, to visit their summer home on the Cycladic island of Kythnos, Greece. We would be contributing to their off-grid Home experiment, by building polyhedral, pod like structures that would eventually house all of the functions of a family home, kitchen, living room, shop, bedrooms. We built foundations and light-weight metal frames that were later covered in ferrocement and painted. The pods stepped up the hill as terraces and gardens are formed in the interstitial spaces. Over the years Chris has experimented with concrete with the ferrocement plaster, door designs, art and landscape.

This summer I was able to return to see the house in its near complete state 33 years later. A real masterpiece of place making, concrete experimentation, art creation, and island living.

Thank you for an experience of a lifetime and I am so grateful I was able to reconnect with you once again.
