Interior design is one of those professions where, when someone is really good at it, they can make it look a whole lot easier than it actually is. 😂
You might see a designer walk into a room and immediately say, “That sofa is too small.” Or move one thing on a floor plan and suddenly the entire room makes sense. We can look at two materials that seem like they have no business together and know they’re going to work. We notice the outlet that’s in the wrong place, the light fixture that’s going to hang too low, or the measurement that could turn into an expensive mistake later.
And sometimes that makes people think, “I could do that.”
And maybe you can pick out a beautiful sofa. Maybe you have a great eye for color. Maybe your Pinterest boards are GOOD. 😂
But that’s only one small piece of what interior design actually is.
What you don’t see are the years spent learning scale and proportion. The floor plans. Measurements. Budgets. Sourcing. Vendor relationships. Installations. Mistakes. Problem solving. Deliveries gone wrong. Products arriving damaged. Contractors calling with questions. And the hundreds of decisions being made behind the scenes so that when you finally walk into the finished room, everything just feels right.
That “eye” people talk about?
Some of it may be natural. But a whole lot of it has been trained.
Experience teaches you what to notice before it becomes a problem. And expertise allows you to make complicated decisions look simple.
So yes, good design can look effortless.
That doesn’t mean there wasn’t a whole lot of work behind making it look that way. 😉
