Not every room needs a renovation. Sometimes it just needs a really good facelift.

When we bought our house, this laundry room was about as basic as it gets. Over the years, we added the shiplap, cabinetry and storage and made it work much better for our family.

And honestly, most of it still works.

So I’m not interested in tearing everything out simply for the sake of making it new. Instead, I’m looking at the pieces that could make the biggest difference.

We’re adding warm white oak backing to the open shelving, changing the light fixture, painting the walls and cabinetry, adding a countertop over the washer and dryer, replacing the cabinet fronts with something that has a little more detail, and adding brass rails to the open shelves.

Nothing drastic.

But together? A completely different room.

I think that’s something we forget about our homes. Good design doesn’t always mean starting over. Sometimes it’s knowing what to keep, what to change, and where a few thoughtful details can do the heavy lifting.

I’m a designer, but I think a lot of my job is listening.

Clients don’t always know how to explain what they want their home to feel like. They know what they like. They definitely know what they don’t like. They save a hundred images. They tell me about the room that has never quite worked.

And somewhere in all of that is the answer.

My job is to listen, ask the right questions, and then take all of those pieces and turn them into something they may not have been able to envision themselves.

Yes, I care about the furniture, the finishes, the scale and all of the details. That’s the design part.

But understanding the people who are going to live there?

That’s where I start.

Every room needs something that keeps it from behaving too well.

For this bedroom, it was this chair.

There are plenty of quieter pieces in the room—the white oak, soft rug, simple line drawing, warm woods and neutrals. And then there’s this wonderfully oversized, ridiculously soft and hairy chair.

It probably shouldn’t work as well as it does. Which is exactly why I love it.

I think some of the most interesting rooms have a little tension to them. Something unexpected next to something refined. A piece with personality among pieces that know how to behave.

Because I never want a home to feel like everything was chosen from the same page of a catalog.

Beautiful, yes. But with alot of personality. Always.

A Different Kind of Before + After

There’s something I love about looking back at where a room started.

Not because the before was terrible. It was simply a home from another time, designed for another season of life.

This one changed quite a bit.

We took away the heaviness, opened up the room, softened the palette and gave the space a much quieter feel.

But my favorite part isn’t any one finish or detail.

It’s that the room feels completely different when you walk into it.

Lighter. Calmer. Easier.

And sometimes, that’s really the point.

Sometimes the biggest transformation isn’t adding something new. It’s knowing what to let go of.

When I first walked into this room, my attention wasn’t on the existing built-in. It was on everything it wasn’t allowing the room to become.

The proportions felt off. The wall lacked warmth. The eye didn’t really have a place to land.

So instead of asking, “What cabinet should we build?” I asked, “What does this room need?”

The answer wasn’t more storage.
It was balance.

A custom built-in gave us the opportunity to simplify the wall, introduce natural white oak, conceal what didn’t need to be seen, and create something that feels like it has always belonged in the architecture.

One of the things I love most about this profession is that every project asks a different question.

This one wasn’t asking for more.
It was asking for better.

Some of the best spaces in a home are the ones you never knew you had.

One thing I’ve learned over the years is not to assume the original builder got it right.

Before I ever think about finishes or cabinetry, I’m asking a different question: Are we making the best use of the space?

In this home, the answer was no.

By rethinking the layout, we uncovered enough hidden space to create a larger walk-in pantry and a dedicated bar area—without adding a single square foot.
Sometimes the biggest transformation isn’t what you add. It’s seeing what’s been there all along.

Every finished kitchen tells two stories. The one you see... and the hundreds of decisions you don’t.

Swipe through this project and you’ll see cabinetry being installed, stone templates being cut, construction dust, finish selections, and finally, a completed kitchen.

What you won’t see are the months of planning that made every one of those details feel effortless.

You won’t see the design revisions, the material selections, the site visits, the conversations with our trades, the countless measurements, or the hundreds of decisions made before a single cabinet was installed.

What you won’t see is everything happening between those moments.

That’s where great design lives.

Because a beautiful kitchen isn’t created on installation day. It’s created through thoughtful planning, collaboration, and hundreds of intentional decisions that bring a vision to life.

Sometimes a room just feels… off.

This room had good bones… but it never quite felt settled.

The fireplace wall felt heavy, the stone visually took over the room, and the scale of the space made everything feel a little disconnected.

Instead of simply updating finishes, we approached this as an architectural moment.

We softened the fireplace, added a custom built-in to bring balance to the wall, layered in warmer materials, and created storage that actually feels intentional to the home.

One of my favorite details is the reeded drawer paired with the arched millwork. It adds just enough character without competing with the simplicity of the space.

And while it may look like “just a fireplace wall,” these are the kinds of details that completely shift how a room feels day to day.

Seeing this transformation come to life has been so rewarding.

Not every transformation needs a dramatic square footage change.

Sometimes, the most impactful shifts happen in the spaces your family touches every single day.

This kids’ bathroom started as a standard builder-grade space with limited function, little storage, and an awkward layout that wasn’t serving the family well.

Instead of forcing the room to work harder, we reimagined how it could function.

— Removed the unnecessary linen closet door to create better flow
— Designed a custom built-in in@place of linen closet for elevated storage
— Added architectural detailing and warmth through millwork
— Created a space that feels intentional, calm, and far more livable

Because beautiful homes aren’t built only in the “showpiece” rooms.

They’re built in the everyday moments too.
The spaces where, towels pile up, and kids get ready for school.

Luxury lives in the details.

Good design solves problems beautifully.

Things happen.
Materials arrive damaged.
Measurements shift.

And while homeowners often see the finished beauty, much of my role happens behind the scenes—problem solving, coordinating, advocating, and protecting the integrity of the design.
