Knowing where to add interest and where to pull back is one of the biggest parts of designing a home that feels layered and thoughtful.

In this kitchen, the plaster hood gets to be the quiet focal point.
The backsplash adds texture without competing.
The brass hardware brings warmth.
The wood island keeps it from feeling too sterile.

When every selection is trying to be the star, the whole space starts to feel noisy. But when some elements lead and others support, the room feels intentional and balanced.

Pushing design boundaries in a powder bath is definitely the move.

They’re tucked away, used in short moments, and don’t have to carry the same visual weight as your kitchen or living room. Which makes them the perfect place to go moodier, bolder, darker, quirkier, or a little more dramatic.

*Before & After* Our clients wanted a larger shower but the space was restricted by the existing linen closet. We opted for a freestanding linen cabinet on the other side of the room so that we could capture the closet space for the shower. Feels like it was always supposed to be that way!
A design plan ensures you’re getting a space that feels intentional, even if you have to completely rethink the layout in order to get there.

Putting a drawing package together takes a lot of behind-the-scenes thinking. It’s not just slapping plans on a page. It’s layers of decisions, dimensions, notes, elevations, clearances, fixture locations, cabinetry details, and all of the small technical considerations that help a design actually come together in real life.

Every room gets thought through. Every transition gets considered. Every detail is documented with the goal of creating clarity—for the client, for the contractor, and for everyone involved in bringing the project to life.

This is where ideas get tested, refined, and translated into something buildable. It’s detailed, sometimes tedious, and incredibly important. A well-documented project helps reduce confusion, supports better ex*****on, and makes it far more likely that the finished result reflects the original vision.

A recent light fixture package for a mid-century modern inspired home in South Austin.

One thing I always do when pulling lighting selections is examine the entire package in one view. Seeing everything together helps me step back and evaluate how the fixtures relate to one another across the home, not just within each individual room.

In my opinion, a strong lighting package should feel connected but not repetitive. I’m paying attention to proportions, silhouettes, finishes, materiality, and how each fixture contributes to the overall rhythm of the house. That bigger-picture review is what helps create a home that feels collected and considered rather than random or overly coordinated.

One of my favorite views is a space under construction.
For some, it might feel overwhelming. For me, it feels full of potential. By this point, there’s already a thoughtful plan in place, so I’m not focused on the mess — I’m focused on what’s coming next and watching it start to take shape.

If this view scares you away from starting a remodel, let's chat!

Last month JCD celebrated 7 years in business! Owning a business is a wild ride. I’m very proud of what I’ve built — and extremely grateful for every client, referral, industry partner, and friend who’s been a part of it. Excited for what the future holds. ✨💃🏼

Glass block gets a bad rap. But in this primary bathroom remodel, we kept it — and it ended up being one of my favorite decisions in the space.

The soft, diffused light it provides is hard to replicate. It also solves a real problem: privacy without closing the room off. That's a functional win most people overlook when they're ready to demo something that feels dated.

The lesson here is one I come back to on almost every project — not everything needs to go. Sometimes a detail just needs better surroundings to complement it.

✨Swipe to see the before✨This kitchen got a full transformation — a larger island for gathering, cabinets to the ceiling, an expanded + more functional pantry, updated finishes and fixtures throughout, and a panel-ready refrigerator that disappears seamlessly into the design. The result of a very intentional design process.

If you’re planning to remodel your home this year, give us a shout!
