Artisan Hardwood Floors has been family-owned and operated for over 50 years. From start to finish, every project we do is supervised by some of the most knowledgeable people in the flooring industry. The useful life of a commercial hardwood floor is measured in years of service.

At La Piscina, that means returning to a floor that lives through daily restaurant and poolside traffic and giving the surface the attention it needs. Here, our crew works methodically across the existing hardwood, using mechanical sanding and dust extraction to prepare and refine the floor while protecting the surrounding interior.

That ability to renew the surface is one of hardwood’s practical strengths in hospitality design. The material does not have to be discarded simply because it has been used.

For a space with an established design identity, good maintenance allows the original material to remain part of it.

“Handmade” can sound like a style. In practice, it is a measure of time.

There is the time spent making the work itself, but also the years behind the hands doing it—the repetition, judgment, and familiarity with the material that make difficult work look assured. That is part of what gives artisan-made woodwork its value. It cannot be separated from the person who made it, reduced to a standard production cycle, or reproduced simply by moving faster.

Time is finite. Skill is built with it. And in truly custom work, both remain present in the finished piece.

La Piscina has plenty of visual movement: curved openings, textured surfaces, exposed concrete, warm light, and the energy that comes with a rooftop restaurant built for gathering.

The hardwood plays a quieter role. Its long runs create a continuous plane beneath those details, giving the room warmth without introducing another competing pattern.

Hardwood can shape much more of a room than the surface underfoot.

For this home, our scope included the wide-plank flooring, staircase, and dark ceiling beams. Each element has a different job: the floor establishes the foundation of the space, the staircase carries the material vertically, and the beams add structure and visual weight overhead.

When woodwork is considered across the architecture, those individual pieces can help the whole home read as one connected space.

This craftsman is cutting back a completed chevron field. The cut prepares the hardwood floor for a custom border designed to solve an interesting problem in this historic home.

Because the room is out of square, its measurements slightly fluctuate around the perimeter. The border gives our crew room to account for those variations while preserving the straight, balanced lines a chevron pattern requires.

It is a subtle, technical solution that respects the room as it was built, working with its original character to create a floor that feels considered rather than corrected.

A staircase does more than move people between floors. Its structure, materials, and finish all change how it sits within the architecture around it.

Open risers keep sightlines through the stair and give the structure a lighter presence. Closed risers create more visual weight and continuity. From there, choices like wood texture, color, handrails, and runners can make the staircase feel refined, rustic, modern, or somewhere in between.

Each of these projects called for a different approach. The common thread is designing the woodwork around what the staircase needs to contribute to the space.

These beams begin as substantial pieces of timber, but getting them to feel at home in a finished interior takes work at every stage.

Our crew prepares and finishes the wood before moving to the jobsite for fitting and installation. The finished beams bring warmth, contrast, and rhythm overhead while reading as part of the architecture—not something added after the fact.

What sort of details define a room? In an open floor plan, a room can still have clear boundaries without adding walls.

Here, the dark-finished hardwood beams create a strong rhythm across the ceiling, helping define the gathering spaces below while keeping the larger room visually connected. Their scale and finish also bring warmth and contrast to an otherwise light interior.

It’s a good example of how custom woodwork can shape the architecture of a space, rather than simply decorate it.

Before we leave a project, we walk clients through day-to-day maintenance, answer questions, and make sure they know how to care for the hardwood they’ll be living with every day.

Our service can continue from there, helping track and maintain the floor as it ages. Sometimes that means seeing our work again many years later.
