When I was diagnosed on December 31st, life suddenly became a series of appointments, decisions, and unknowns. At my first oncology appointment, I mentioned the Boston Marathon. My doctor wrote the date down. It mattered to me, so it mattered to her.

Boston gave me something to keep moving toward. Training through treatment looked very different than it had before. I had to let go of pace, mileage, and expectations, and learn that strength doesn’t always mean pushing harder. Sometimes it simply means taking the next step.

Through all of it, I felt God’s presence in ways both big and small. In my family and friends, the people who showed up, the care I received, and the peace that came even when things were still frightening.

I didn’t arrive at the Boston starting line as the same person who qualified for it. I arrived more grateful, more aware of the people carrying me, and with a very different understanding of what it means to be strong.
