🌸🍂 DAHLIA LOVERS! It’s Time to Start Preparing Those Tubers for Winter! 🍂🌸
With our first hard frost approaching, or if you’re simply ready to wrap up your growing season as I know some of you have been asking, it’s time to start the process of putting those beautiful dahlias to bed for the winter! 🥹🌸
I’m going to share my process step by step, starting with
Part 1: Cutting Back Your Dahlias! ✂️
🌼 STEP 1: Check Your Labels!
Before cutting anything, make sure your dahlias are properly labeled if you want to keep track of your varieties! Trust me, once those beautiful blooms and stems are gone, it’s nearly impossible to tell who’s who! Make sure your labels will stay with the tubers throughout the digging and storage process.
✂️ STEP 2: Cut Those Stems!
After your first hard frost has blackened the foliage, or when you’re ready to call it a season, cut the entire plant down near soil level. I like to cut just above the soil, leaving a short section of stem to mark where the tubers are underground with their labels attached still.
🌱 STEP 3: Let Them REST!
Here’s the part that surprises some people… don’t dig them up just yet!
I like to leave my tubers in the ground for about a week after cutting them back, weather permitting.
Why?! 🤔
This resting period gives the tubers a little extra time to finish maturing. As the growing season ends, the plant has been storing energy in those tubers to help it survive dormancy and fuel next year’s growth. Allowing them a little extra time in the ground may help their skins toughen up and help their eyes become more visible which can improve their ability to withstand winter storage.
Think of it as their final little preparation before their long winter nap!
🌸 COMING NEXT!
I’ll be sharing the next steps soon: DIGGING, DIVIDING & STORING your dahlia tubers so you can enjoy these beauties again next year!
I wanted to get this first part out for anyone who’s ready to start the process!
It’s always bittersweet saying goodbye to dahlia season, but knowing what those little tubers are capable of next year makes it a little easier! 💕
🌼 Grateful Bloom 🌼
I am using last years pics to show the cutting process as I am waiting a bit to cut myself.
