This is the room that offers the biggest surprise in our Hunt Valley project.

The large formal dining room in the before photo had great bones, yet was not functional for the way our clients live. Multiple walls came down, opening the space entirely to the front hall, the kitchen and the rest of the first floor. Custom built-ins were designed around the home’s existing arched windows to enhance the architecture, and the botanical fabric used in their treatment carries the color story from this room through the rest of the first floor.

Some homes can guide our design direction if we allow ourselves to see past the surface.

Our Hunt Valley project is a great example of this. The home had not been touched since the 1980s, yet underneath everything that needed to be updated, we found a house with truly beautiful bones. The high ceilings, generous room proportions, gorgeous views and architectural details were elements that needed to be highlighted, so we simply followed its lead.

The most expensive renovation mistakes do not happen during construction. They happen during the planning phase, or before it.

Every item on this list is something we have watched derail a project that started with good intentions and a real investment. Front-loading the right decisions, in the right order, with someone who has vast experience is the difference between a renovation that finishes beautifully and one that does not finish the way you imagined.

The mirror is doing more work in this room than anything else.

A scalloped edge softens a space in a way that’s hard to achieve through paint or tile alone, and placing it above the clean lines of a Shaker vanity creates exactly the kind of tension that makes a room interesting rather than predictable.

The starburst tile floor was already bringing personality from the ground up and the mirror pulled everything into conversation.

One decision, made with intention changes the feeling of an entire space. That’s often how the best design choices work.

When we opened the kitchen to the staircase at our Cross Keys project, the staircase had to become part of the design.

What had been purely functional was now on full display, and it needed to hold its own against a brand new kitchen. We replaced the treads with white oak, added white risers, and specified custom matte black iron balusters with a rectangular detail that connected directly to the black hardware running through the kitchen.

The pale blue-gray walls tied it back to the broader color story in the space. Swipe to see where it started.

Every room in your home deserves to be designed, including this one.

The laundry room is sometimes treated as an afterthought, a space to close the door on rather than open up. In this project we approached it the same way we approach every other room, starting with how it actually gets used and building from there.

Gray Shaker cabinetry, a penny tile mosaic backsplash, sage green walls, and woven baskets on open shelves turned a purely functional space into one that makes the work feel a little less like work.

Full-service interior design means every detail gets the same attention, whether it ends up on a magazine cover or behind a closed door.

Navy is not a safe choice. It’s a confident one, and there’s a big difference.
In this Cross Keys bathroom a white or gray vanity would have been the easy route intended to disappear into the room, but we chose to take a different approach. Instead we leaned in to the navy layering brass pulls and a warm gold mirror to compliment it.
When color is chosen with that kind of intention, it doesn’t go out of style. It just becomes part of how the house feels.
