I swear half of adulthood is asking, “Where are my keys?” while they’re somehow already in your hand. 😂

Keys. Wallet. Mail. The bag you need to remember tomorrow. All those little things that tend to land wherever there’s an open surface.

Enter: the drop space.

A designated landing spot near the door gives all of the daily chaos somewhere to go and makes getting out the door tomorrow morning a whole lot easier.

Hooks, drawers, cabinetry, a little counter space…whatever makes sense for the way your family actually lives.

Because functional is important. But there’s absolutely no reason we can’t make it pretty, too. 😉

Why did I walk away from every commercial office space I looked at?

High rent. Fluorescent lights. Drop ceilings. Zero personality. And nowhere near the kind of space we actually needed to design well.

So instead of settling for a beige box, I bought a fixer-upper with good bones, beautiful old details and A LOT of work ahead of us. 😅

Was it the easier choice? Absolutely not. But I could see what it could become from day one.

AI is great. I use it. I like it.

But designing a home has never been just about coming up with pretty ideas.

It’s the decisions, the details, the problem-solving and the approximately 847 things happening behind the scenes that turn an idea into a finished space.

So use AI for inspiration. Ask it all the questions.

But when it comes to actually pulling off your home? You might still want a human for that. 😉

Sometimes the best design decisions are the ones you didn’t plan for.

Sourcing is a huge part of this job, and availability can change even the most carefully thought-out plan. The key is knowing what made the original selection work—the color, scale, feeling and finding another way to get there.

And every once in a while, the pivot becomes the thing you can’t imagine the room without.

I think this Brooklyn condo was one of those times. 🤍

28 years of marriage and Greg has also held a few unofficial positions at Redhead Design: bookkeeper, delivery guy, extra set of hands, and occasional design consultant.

According to him, I don’t always take his advice. According to me… he’s probably right. 😂

Sometimes custom starts with a detailed drawing. And sometimes it starts with a general idea, a roll of paper on the floor, a few pieces of wood and a lot of back and forth.

For this Brooklyn project, we knew we needed a pedestal table that could accommodate as many people as possible in a small apartment. We also knew that if we were going to have something made, we wanted it to feel truly one-of-a-kind.

So instead of handing our furniture maker a drawing and saying, “build this,” we worked through it together—playing with the shape, scale, finishes and those walnut dowels until we landed on something that felt just right.

This is my favorite kind of custom: a really fun client, a really collaborative maker, and an idea that gets better as you go.

My resume before Redhead Design would probably surprise you.

I cleaned a school. Worked in a boutique. Waitressed (badly). Learned how to grow mushrooms as a backup plan — yes, really. Became a graphic designer. And then spent a number of years home with my kids before eventually finding my way to interior design.

None of it felt like a straight line at the time, but looking back, there’s a thread through all of it.

The boutique gave me an outlet for putting things together creatively. Graphic design taught me proportion, color, communication and how to guide someone through an experience — not all that different from designing a room. Motherhood reminded me how much I needed creativity in my life.

And apparently cleaning taught me that there is, in fact, a right way to do things. 😂

It took a few jobs (and a few mushrooms) to get here, but somehow they all became part of the story.

Fall always makes me want more — more color, more pattern, more texture. And thankfully, that seems to be exactly where textiles are headed. 🍂

Old houses come with charm… and some VERY questionable bathroom storage. 😂

For both of these bathrooms, the goal isn’t to completely reinvent the space — it’s to take what’s already there and make it work so much better.

In the primary bath, that means turning an awkward closet and dormer window into beautiful built-in storage that actually feels intentional. And in the den bath, we’re borrowing a little unused wall space for a tall cabinet that adds storage without overwhelming the room.

Proof that sometimes the best solution isn’t more square footage. It’s just using the square footage you already have better.
