I’m from Oregon born and raised and unfortunately I’ve never went and seen this. But pretty dang cool!

Friends… imagine driving through rural Oregon and glancing up at a hillside — only to see a 300-foot smiley face staring back at you. Not painted. Not carved. Just… growing there. 🙂

In 2011, two men from Hampton Lumber — co-owner David Hampton and forester Dennis Creel — stood on that slope with a simple idea. After a routine harvest, they were replanting the land. Same long days. Same tree charts. Same old process. But instead of rebuilding the forest in straight, predictable rows, they decided to slip in a little joy. 🌳

They planted larch trees in the shape of a giant face, knowing those trees would turn bright gold each fall. They filled the eyes and mouth with Douglas fir, a deep green that never changes. On the ground, you’d never notice the plan. But from above? The hillside lights up every autumn like nature’s own emoji. 🍂

Here’s the turn, friends.

This wasn’t a marketing stunt. Not a tourism scheme. It wasn’t even meant to go viral. It was just two men in a tough industry choosing to leave behind something playful — something that would reveal itself only when the seasons were right. And somehow, their quiet joke became a landmark now called the Oregon Smiley Face Forest, photographed and shared long after the planters walked away. 📸

Maybe that’s the gentle truth here: even small acts, planted with no expectation, can grow into something that makes the future smile.
