Folks always ask how long it takes to make a rug, so.... I've spent my spare time the last several months cutting t-shirts into strips, organizing colors into theme groups (autumn, peacock/mermaid, masculine, etc) sewing them together and rolling them into balls. I now have enough for 6 rugs, plus I have enough sock scraps for 1 rug. I've had a terrible time locating the scraps from sock factories that I used to use to make really fabulous soft squishy rugs, so this might be the last one.

My big loom is all set up and ready to weave, which takes at least one whole day from start to finish, winding on the warp and threading it through the heddles and the reed. This loom is close to 100 years old and originally came from the Indiana State Mental Hospital. I bought it from a small museum that was downsizing, and my daughter Kinsey completely refinished it. I previously had a larger loom of the same type but it was just too big for the space I had available.

Once the MANY hours of prep work is done, it takes about 3 hours to weave an average size rug, like you might put at your kitchen sink or bathtub. When the weaving is done, I spend another hour tying the ends so it all holds together.

I hope that helps answer some questions! I'll post pix when I finish this batch of rugs, then I need to spend a weekend or two dying fiber - alpaca, wool, mohair, and my own homegrown angora. Stay tuned!
