What makes a dining space feel truly elevated yet inviting? It’s all about the perfect mix of texture, contrast, and subtle storytelling.

For these clients, their dining room needed to be more than a place to gather—it had to feel like a sanctuary of warmth and hospitality.

Design details that make this space shine:

* A statement chandelier that feels both sculptural and airy, casting a soft, inviting glow.

* The arched mirror & console table tie into the home's faith-based architectural motifs.

* A wallpaper with 3D depth creates quiet drama while maintaining a serene aesthetic.

* Organic elements—from the blue hydrangeas to the greenery—soften the formal structure of the space.

Today, as I dig through photos and videos to put together an epic recap of my whirlwind Extreme Makeover Home Edition experience, I can’t help but smile at the incredible gift this show has been to me.

I’m so proud of how much I’ve leaned and grown over the past three months. I’ve grown in confidence, and I finally learned how to ignore the cameras! 😂

Sometimes, pictures just don't communicate all of the small nuances that go into an effective design.

So, here's a deeper look at some of the styling tricks I used to create this beautiful vignette in the sitting room of a historic home in Hinsdale, Illinois!

Slide left to see the tips, but here's a quick recap:

1) Preserve Historical Elements: This wallpaper is actually a damask-printed fabric that was installed in the early 1900s. Leaning into it for the color story allowed us to preserve the history of this home while giving it a fresh take!

2) Mix high and low art pieces: Because the wallcovering could not be punctured to protect its historical value, I combined several different sizes of art pieces (some original pieces from a local gallery and some print reproductions) to fill in the space above the dresser.

3) Use lamps to create a glow: This room has no natural light sources, so I used lamps throughout the room to create a warm, inviting glow. This lamp works particularly well because the base is clear, and it allows you to still enjoy the color and pattern of the wallcovering.

4) Stack small accessories: Adding and stacking smaller accessories elevates any tabletop surface while also giving the area you are styling an air of sophistication.

5) Create high contrast moments: To embrace the wallcovering, I decided to paint the trim colors a rich blue to connect the background color of the fabric to the new, fresh design of the space. This allowed the lighter-colored furniture pieces to really pop!
