Okay so here it is folks. I’ve heard so many different memories about 1041 Military Ave. so I thought I’d do a little research and see what I can find out with a timeline.

1. Late 1800s / early 1900s
Originally an undertaking (funeral) business. Local history says embalming fluid was found under the floors during renovations.
2. 1920s–1930s
Included the Grantham Music Store era, when Victrolas and music equipment were sold there.
3. Harvey’s Furniture & Undertaking
Historic Route 66 sources state the building housed “Harvey’s Furniture and Undertaking business” going back to at least 1921. An old Route 66 postcard even reportedly shows the “HARVEYS” name painted between the upstairs windows.
4. Sweet’s Furniture Store
After Harvey’s, the building became Sweet’s Furniture. This was likely during the mid-1900s, before the western wear era. The building was well known locally as a furniture store for many years.
5. Bilke’s Western Store & Museum
Around the early 1980s until 2012, it became Bilke’s Western Store with a western museum upstairs. A large cattle drive mural painted in 1991 is still on the exterior wall.
6. Somewhere in Time Antiquities
Opened in 2016 as a large Route 66 antique mall.

One really neat detail is that the building has continuously been tied to “home furnishings” in one form or another for over a century — funeral furnishings, furniture store, western décor, antiques, and now another antique/flea market.

That continuity actually adds a lot to the historic character of the property.
Pretty cool!
