This is a deck I built last year with a little help from a few people who were definitely needed when the time came those are 6x6 posts they are attached to the top of a 4.5 ft pure of concrete that comes to the surface level of the ground because it is on the side of a sloped hill that is away from the slope of the house and to make sure it was structurally sound and properly built I decided to call an engineer who mind you did not give me an answer to the question I asked but I had to engineer something within my own engineering knowledge and wisdom and experience because I was attaching the ledger board to balloon framing which was all over the place so my question to her was if I put this threaded rod that is 3 ft into the house through two joists what kind of spring connections or rubber washer connectors that would be appropriate in the case of expansion and contraction and the movement of the house with the deck so that I wouldn't pull the hardwood floor apart that was being used as the floor system right above the joists that I was going into. Mind you I haven't seen anything like this and I haven't found any articles or forms with this type of system installed but if anybody has any ideas on what they would have done in the situation where the joists are running parallel with the ledger but they are a foot inside of the wall because of the balloon framing technique that was used to frame the house which is a 2x4 at one spot against the joist and then a 2x4 2 in away from it and a foot away putting it up against the wall to frame the wall and 16 in over another 2x4 and then 18 in another 2x4 and so on so on so I decided to do what I could to screw the ledger into the balloon framing 2x3s mind you with ledger lag bolts and then for the extra structure that I deemed necessary I used 3 ft threaded rods to go in as far as I could and as far as I could reach was 2 joists in as they were 12" apart and that brought me to the very edge of the ledger which allowed me to only fit a washer and a lock nut providing me with disability that I was looking for but not giving me the satisfaction of knowing that the movement of the house and the deck would not create a crack in the hardwood floor above the floor joist that I used to drill through and place the threaded rod. I did happen to use very small very stiff springs in between the two washers and lock nut on each joist on the inside edge of each joist and that was in hopes of possibly giving enough tension but also not putting too much tension on the joists to where they might pool away from the floor or push a different way laterally than the floor would be expanding and causing it to crack. So far since last year nothing has moved nothing as cracked and everything is in a sound condition. And this is just one of the few instances where I didn't know neither did I find an answer to the dilemma I was pressed with but instead came up with a logical solution in my head that has so far been a successful one but if anybody has any aid with this topic I would definitely show you a diagram and would like to know more about your thoughts on it as I am always down to take constructive criticism or construction criticism either one I appreciate all of the comments that would help thanks.
