The show starts TODAY! If you're planning to be here over the next few days, give us a shout. And if you're curious how we "boat show," here's a few tips:
1. Go early in the morning or late afternoon on Thursday. Saturday is for families and free tote bags. Thursday is when brokers have time to talk and nobody is queuing to get below.
2. See the boat you came for third. You will judge it more clearly after two others have recalibrated your eye.
3. Open the engine hatch before you look at the salon. Every boat looks good in the salon. The engine space tells you how the boat was maintained and, more importantly, whether anyone can reach the things that will need reaching.
4. Ask when, not what. Not "what's the rig?" but "when was the standing rigging last replaced?" Dates are facts. Descriptions are adjectives.
5. Bring socks and shoes you can kneel in. You will be asked to remove the shoes and you will want to get down on the sole. Both of these matter more than you expect.
6. Ask what they would change. Every honest broker has an answer. The ones who say "nothing" are telling you something.
7. Photograph hardware, not interiors. You will remember the varnish. You will not remember which winches were on the primaries, and that is the detail you will want a week later.
Find us on the dock if you want a second pair of eyes.
