Thinking about peel-and-stick wallpaper? Here’s what to know before you buy. 🏡

Peel-and-stick wallpaper can transform a room, but “self-adhesive” doesn’t mean it will stick to every wall. The material, wall finish, and preparation all matter.

🔹 Different brands have different requirements.
Tempaper, NuWallpaper, and Spoonflower aren’t interchangeable. For example, Tempaper recommends a smooth wall that has been primed and painted with eggshell, satin, or semi-gloss paint. Spoonflower also warns that certain washable, scrubbable, and no-VOC paints can interfere with adhesion. Always read the instructions for the exact product you’re buying.

🔹 Look beyond the pattern and price.
Check the material, finish, roll or panel dimensions, pattern repeat, and installation instructions. Does the design require overlapping seams or matching edges? Is the product suitable for your room’s humidity? Order a sample to check the appearance and adhesion on your own wall before buying the full amount. A higher price alone doesn’t guarantee compatibility.

🔹 Your walls need to be smooth, clean, dry, and sound.
Dust, grease, loose paint, and wall texture can prevent good contact. Holes and rough patches need preparation first. Wallpaper won’t repair an uneven wall, and even a slight texture can affect adhesion.

🔹 Do you need primer?
Sometimes—but there’s no universal answer. Bare drywall and patched areas need the appropriate preparation. If your wall already has a sound, compatible painted finish, an additional primer coat may not be necessary.

Primer helps prepare and seal the surface; it doesn’t flatten texture or fix peeling paint. Also, some brands require paint over the primer, so don’t assume any primer alone is a suitable final surface.

🔹 Fresh paint needs time.
Dry to the touch is different from fully cured. NuWallpaper specifies at least four weeks after painting, while Spoonflower specifies at least 30 days. Follow both the wallpaper and paint manufacturers’ instructions, including any longer waiting period.

🔹 How can you reduce lifting and peeling?
• Test a sample before committing.
• Clean the wall using the manufacturer’s recommended method and let it dry completely.
• Let the wallpaper acclimate as instructed.
• Smooth each panel thoroughly, including the edges, without stretching it.
• Follow the correct seam method for that product.
• Use it only in suitable temperature and humidity conditions.

If an edge starts lifting, check the cause before adding glue. Extra adhesive may affect removability and should only be used with the manufacturer’s approval.

And remember: “removable” doesn’t guarantee damage-free removal from every painted wall.

Planning a wallpaper project? Send me pictures of your space and a link to the wallpaper before you order. I’d be happy to help you check the installation requirements and provide an estimate!

How to Prepare Your Walls for Wallpaper: A Smooth Finish Starts Here

Beautiful wallpaper starts with properly prepared walls. Even the best wallpaper won’t look its best if the surface underneath isn’t smooth and stable.

Before installation, walls should be clean, dry, smooth, and properly primed.

For drywall (Sheetrock), any loose material, old adhesive, dents, or damaged areas should be repaired first. Depending on the condition of the wall, this may include light spackling or a skim coat, followed by sanding and wallpaper primer.

For plaster walls, preparation can be a little different because the surface is harder and more durable. Old wallpaper and backing often come off more easily, but the wall still needs to be checked for cracks, uneven areas, and leftover adhesive.

If old wallpaper has been removed and backing is still on the wall, it doesn’t always need to be completely removed. Sometimes removing all of it can actually damage the drywall underneath. The best approach is to first evaluate the surface, sand where necessary, and properly seal any remaining adhesive before applying wallpaper primer.

This step is especially important because old glue residue can react with water-based primer or wallpaper adhesive and cause bubbling, cracking, or other surface problems later.

The goal is simple: the smoother and more stable the wall, the better the wallpaper will look and the longer it will last.

Good wallpaper installation always starts with good wall preparation.

Grasscloth Wallpaper: Natural Texture & Timeless Style

Grasscloth wallpaper is a beautiful way to add texture, warmth, and natural character to an interior. Unlike traditional printed wallpaper, grasscloth is valued for its woven surface and subtle variations that make every installation unique.

Natural Grasscloth

Natural grasscloth is made from plant fibers such as sisal, jute, h**p, raffia, bamboo, and other grasses, woven and attached to a backing.

Because the fibers are natural, variations in color, texture, and thickness are expected. Visible seams and slight differences between panels are part of the authentic grasscloth look — not installation defects.

On the wall, natural grasscloth creates a sophisticated, organic effect with beautiful depth that changes subtly depending on the lighting.

Faux Grasscloth

Faux grasscloth recreates the woven appearance using manufactured materials, printing, or embossing. It usually offers more consistent coloring, better durability, and easier maintenance, while still providing the textured look of natural grasscloth.

It can be a great alternative for high-traffic areas or for homeowners who prefer a more uniform and practical finish.

Installation Matters

Grasscloth requires careful wall preparation and precise installation. Natural fibers can be sensitive to adhesive and moisture, and paste on the surface may cause permanent staining.

The installer also needs to plan the placement of the panels carefully, taking natural color variations and the manufacturer’s hanging instructions into consideration.

Care & Maintenance

Natural grasscloth is a delicate, generally non-washable wallcovering. Water and cleaning products can stain, discolor, or damage the natural fibers.

For routine care, it should be gently vacuumed with a soft brush attachment to remove dust. Stains can be difficult — and sometimes impossible — to remove without leaving a visible mark.

For this reason, natural grasscloth is best suited for dry, lower-traffic areas such as bedrooms, dining rooms, home offices, and formal living spaces. It may not be the most practical choice for bathrooms, kitchens, children’s rooms, or areas where walls are frequently touched or exposed to moisture.

If you love the grasscloth look but need something more durable and easier to clean, faux grasscloth may be a better option.

Is Grasscloth Right for You?

Choose natural grasscloth if you love authentic texture, organic variation, and a handcrafted look.

Choose faux grasscloth if you want a similar aesthetic with greater consistency, durability, and easier maintenance.

Either way, grasscloth can turn a simple wall into a beautiful design feature — subtle from a distance and full of texture up close.

Why Priming Walls Before Wallpaper Installation Is So Important

One of the most common questions I hear from homeowners is:

“Do I really need primer before wallpaper?”

The short answer is yes.

A quality wallpaper primer is one of the most important steps in a successful wallpaper installation. While it may seem like an unnecessary extra step, skipping primer can create problems both immediately after installation and years later when it’s time to remove the wallpaper.

What Does Wallpaper Primer Actually Do?

Wallpaper primer creates a smooth, sealed surface between your wall and the wallpaper adhesive.

Instead of the glue soaking directly into drywall or painted walls, it bonds to the primer. This creates a strong but controlled bond that’s designed specifically for wallpaper.

Think of primer as a protective barrier for your walls.

What Happens If You Skip Primer?

Every wall is different.

Some painted walls are extremely porous.

Others have old flat paint that absorbs moisture.

Some have patches of drywall compound that soak up adhesive like a sponge.

When wallpaper paste is applied directly to these surfaces, several things can happen.

Uneven Adhesion

Some areas absorb more paste than others.

This can lead to:

* lifting seams
* curling edges
* bubbles
* poor adhesion over time

Even if the wallpaper looks perfect on installation day, problems may develop months later.

Drywall Damage During Removal

This is usually the biggest issue.

Wallpaper adhesive can bond directly to drywall paper.

When the wallpaper is removed years later, it may pull off:

* drywall facing paper
* paint
* skim coat
* portions of the drywall surface

Instead of simply removing wallpaper, homeowners often discover damaged walls that require extensive repairs before repainting or installing new wallpaper.

Removing Wallpaper from Primed Walls

When walls are properly primed with a wallpaper-specific primer, removal is usually much easier.

In many cases:

* wallpaper releases more cleanly
* less drywall repair is needed
* less sanding and patching are required
* preparing the room for its next finish is much faster

No removal is ever guaranteed to be effortless—wall condition, wallpaper type, adhesive, and how long the wallpaper has been installed all play a role—but primer greatly improves the chances of a cleaner removal.

What If You Skip Primer?

Without primer, future repairs can become expensive.

Damaged drywall often requires:

* removing loose drywall paper
* sealing damaged areas
* skim coating
* sanding
* priming again
* repainting or preparing for new wallpaper

Depending on the amount of damage, repair costs can easily range from a few hundred dollars to well over $1,000 before new wall finishes can even begin.

A relatively inexpensive coat of primer today can help avoid much larger repair costs later.

We Always Recommend Proper Surface Preparation

Wallpaper itself is only part of a successful installation.

Professional surface preparation—including cleaning, repairing imperfections, and applying the proper wallpaper primer—helps protect your investment and gives your wallpaper the best chance to look beautiful for many years.

Wallpaper is meant to transform a room.

Proper wall preparation helps ensure that it does exactly that—both today and when it’s time for the next renovation.

Wallpaper on the Ceiling: When It Works—and When It Doesn’t

Wallpaper on the ceiling can completely change a room. It adds character, makes the space feel more finished, and can turn an otherwise plain ceiling into a real design feature.

It works especially well in smaller spaces like powder rooms, bedrooms, closets, entryways, and home offices. A bold pattern on the ceiling can look beautiful when the walls are kept fairly simple.

But ceiling wallpaper is not right for every project.

The ceiling needs to be smooth, clean, dry, and properly primed. Cracks, peeling paint, uneven texture, or previous water damage can cause problems. Wallpaper may actually highlight imperfections instead of hiding them.

Temperature matters too. Installing wallpaper in extreme heat can be very difficult. The paste may dry too quickly, the paper may stop sliding into position, and the edges may not stick properly. Direct airflow from fans or air conditioning can also make the wallpaper dry unevenly.

For most ceilings, good-quality non-woven wallpaper is easier to work with than heavy or peel-and-stick material. Peel-and-stick wallpaper can be especially risky overhead because its adhesive may not be strong enough for long-term use.

Ceiling installation is also physically demanding. You are working above your head while trying to hold, align, smooth, and match the pattern at the same time. For large ceilings, expensive wallpaper, or complicated patterns, professional installation is usually worth it.

Wallpaper on the ceiling can look amazing—but preparation, the right materials, and good working conditions make all the difference.

Why I Love Wallpaper in Powder Rooms

If you ask me where wallpaper makes the biggest impact, my answer is always the same — the powder room.

It’s usually one of the smallest rooms in the house, which means you can have a little fun with it. Bold florals, fun animals, dramatic patterns, or beautiful designer prints that might feel like “too much” in a living room suddenly look absolutely perfect in a powder room.

One of my favorite combinations is wainscoting on the bottom and wallpaper on the top. It gives the room so much character and makes it feel custom instead of builder-grade.

Here’s something I always tell my clients: not all wallpaper is made for every bathroom.

If your powder room is just a toilet and sink, you’re in luck. You have lots of wallpaper options because there’s very little moisture in the room.

If your powder room also has a shower, you need to be a little more careful. Always check what the manufacturer recommends. Some wallpapers are designed to handle humidity, while others are only meant for dry spaces. Good ventilation also makes a huge difference.

I always tell people not to fall in love with the pattern first. Fall in love with a wallpaper that actually works for your space. That way you’ll enjoy it for years instead of worrying about it.

Another thing I love about powder rooms is that you don’t need many rolls. It’s the perfect place to splurge on a gorgeous designer wallpaper without covering an entire house.

And honestly… these are usually the rooms people remember. Guests may not remember your sofa or dining table, but they’ll definitely remember the powder room with the amazing wallpaper.

Sometimes the smallest room in the house makes the biggest design statement.

✨ Vintage Is Back — But With a Modern Twist

One of the biggest design trends I’m seeing right now is the return of vintage-inspired interiors.

Homeowners are moving away from perfectly plain spaces and adding character through wallpaper, color, texture, and timeless patterns.

Botanical prints, classic florals, Art Deco-inspired geometrics, and rich colors are finding their way into powder rooms, entryways, and accent walls.

The goal isn’t to make a room look old. It’s to create a space that feels collected, unique, and full of personality.

Which style would you choose for your home: timeless vintage charm or clean modern minimalism?

How Murals Transform a Space

A mural is more than just wallpaper — it can completely change the feel of a room. The right mural adds personality, creates a focal point, and helps tell the story of your home.

Murals work especially well in bedrooms, nurseries, home offices, living rooms, and on accent walls. Scenic landscapes, soft botanicals, abstract designs, and artistic textures can make a room feel larger, brighter, or more relaxing.

However, murals are not always the best choice. In very small rooms, busy patterns can feel overwhelming. Large furniture that covers most of the image may also reduce the visual impact. Choosing the right wall is just as important as choosing the design itself.

For the best results, the wall should be properly prepared and primed before installation. A smooth surface helps ensure a beautiful finish and long-lasting performance.

When thoughtfully selected and professionally installed, a mural can turn an ordinary wall into the most memorable feature of a room.
