Choosing countertops? Look beyond the sample.
Ēclos by Cosentino is a newer option worth understanding. It is a manufactured composite made primarily from glass-based mineral fillers held together with polyester resin, plus pigments and additives. Cosentino’s safety data sheet lists 85–95% inorganic fillers, mainly glass, and 5–15% polymerized polyester resin, depending on the formulation.
Its INLAYR process builds the decorative design in layers through the slab’s thickness, allowing movement to continue into the edges. It offers easy maintenance without sealing and resistance to everyday stains and scratches.
But every countertop material has tradeoffs.
Ä’clos
Cosentino advertises heat resistance up to 428°F, but that does not mean unlimited heat protection. Its warranty excludes higher temperatures and prolonged heat exposure. Its safety sheet also recommends trivets, so that is the advice I would follow.
Ä’clos is intended for indoor use, and its warranty excludes outdoor use and direct-sunlight exposure. That deserves attention in a sunny kitchen. Hard impacts can cause damage, and because it is newer, it has less long-term history in homes than established materials.
The advertised 25-year warranty requires registration within six months and proof of purchase.
Engineered quartz
Quartz requires no sealing and offers many colors and patterns. Its biggest limitation is heat. Hot cookware and heat-producing appliances can damage it, so protective trivets matter.
Edges can chip, scratches are possible, and harsh cleaners or abrasive pads can damage the finish. Seams may show changes in pattern or shade. Always follow the particular brand’s care instructions.
Quartzite
Genuine quartzite offers natural variation, excellent hardness, and resistance to common kitchen acids. However, some varieties absorb water and oils more readily than others. Sealing needs depend on the actual stone, and sealer does not make it stainproof.
Its hardness can also increase fabrication costs. Verify what you are buying: some marble and dolomitic marble are incorrectly sold as quartzite and can develop acid etching.
Choose from the full slabs and review the layout. A small sample cannot show where every vein or color change will fall. Trivets and cutting boards are still recommended.
Granite
Granite remains a durable natural stone choice, but performance varies by slab. Some varieties benefit from sealing, while others need little or none. There is no universal rule that all granite must be sealed every year.
Chips and cracks are possible. Although granite handles heat well, concentrated heat can create stress and cause cracking. Certain cleaners can also damage the stone or its sealer.
Natural movement can make seams more noticeable, so slab selection and placement matter.
One more detail about Ä’clos: its first collection is formulated without crystalline silica, although trace impurities below 1% may occur. That matters during fabrication, but proper dust controls are still necessary.
At Beautifully Done, we consider how you cook, the upkeep you are comfortable with, and the installed cost. We also pay attention to the edges, seams, and support that affect the finished result.
Ask what can damage a material before you choose it. You deserve to understand what you are bringing into your home.
