After touring the locations of the D-Day invasion, we all sat quietly in the car on the ride back to our Airbnb. The magnitude of the hallowed ground where our feet had tread hit us as we processed conflicting feelings of sorrow and gratitude.
We leave here changed after visiting these places and hearing these stories. We are indebted to the young men who valiantly fought for the freedom and liberation of a country far from our own shores. We freely stand on this ground as the generations who came behind. The ones they fought to protect. The ones who commit to honor their lives and their service and their sacrifice. 🇺🇸
D-Day Invasion Sites visited:
📍: SAINTE MÈRE ÉGLISE - The first town in France to be liberated by American troops in WW2.
📍: ANGOVILLE AU PLAIN - In this small village, the tiny church was used as a first aid post by two 2 medics from the 501st Parachute Infantry Regiment, 101st Airborne Division, who managed to save the lives of many injured soldiers, American as well as German.
📍: UTAH BEACH - Of the two American sectors on D-Day, the landings at Utah Beach were the most successful.
📍: POINTE DU HOC - On top of 100ft high cliffs, the Germans had established a long-range gun battery. It was the task of US Army Rangers to assault this position, scale the cliffs and destroy the German guns.
📍: NORMANDY AMERICAN CEMETERY AND MEMORIAL - The final resting place of 9389 American servicemen and women from WW2, including the Normandy campaign, located on high ground overlooking the eastern side of Omaha Beach.
📍: OMAHA BEACH - The beach where the heaviest casualties on D-Day were suffered.
We highly recommend booking guide and historian: Mike of Allied Victory Tours if you plan to visit Normandy. He brought the stories and scenes to life in a meaningful and powerful way.
