My home is an ongoing experiment in craft and reuse: recycled glass reshaped by hand, industrial windows rebuilt piece by piece, stone reclaimed from a flooded Chinese village — each element carrying its own history.

This “design lab” is where concepts like corner windows, thin mullions, and material repurposing are tested at full scale before becoming features in our clients’ homes.

Timeless architecture begins with a willingness to try, refine, and try again.

Thoughtful design outlives trends.

A bathtub built from concrete block, lined with foam, and clad in stainless steel. A porthole door crafted from galvanized sheet metal and walls covered with handmade, Berkeley artisan tile – still beautiful and functional 22 years later.

Back in the ’70s, I built this house with whatever I could find: salvaged beams, old redwood, and a lot of patience.

What started as necessity turned into my lifelong philosophy:
design with what you have, and make it meaningful.

They called me the “Nearly New Man.”
I called it home.

Ever seen a torch carve texture like this? I’m using nothing but foam and a flame to shape wild contours you just can’t get any other way. The trick? A torn edge and a steady hand.

I’ve been playing with foam and a hot knife for years — might sound strange, but it’s one of my favorite ways to make these wild, natural, geological textures in concrete. In this video, I’m showing how a little heat and a few different masks can shape foam to give the concrete a texture that feels like it was formed in some glacial landscape.

What takes nature eons to shape, I do with a hot knife.
Geology, architecture, and everyday life — all carved into one wall.

When I design, I see walls as more than boundaries. They’re an opportunity for texture, metaphor, and meaning. In this project, I carved foam to echo geological movement — a nod to the earth beneath us — and shaped a wall with an “eye” to keep an eye on the life happening outside.
