While cancer incidence rates are comparable between urban and rural U.S. populations, the latter group faces higher mortality rates. Per the American Society of Clinical Oncologists, non-metropolitan areas are projected to meet only 29% of the demand for medical and hematology oncologists by 2037, compared to greater than 100% of demand met in metro areas. That's a significant gap.

Cushing Terrell has teamed up with many rural and smaller community healthcare clients to help minimize this gap through the design of state-of-the-art cancer care facilities that enhance flexibility, technology, and collaboration and create comfortable, supportive environments, all while balancing budgets and needs.

New podcast episode drop! Retail design director Sheri Blattel joins the podcast this week to discuss the effects of AI on physical storefronts and how businesses are answering the use of AI and other dynamic adjustments in retail with community-based, locally engaged retail environments. Sheri also talks about the trajectory of AI in product sales and how retailers can prepare for longevity and dig into personality and connectivity in their built environments.

"Most conversations we’re seeing related to commerce have shifted to AI. Artificial intelligence is being deployed to achieve complex goals. It’s being used for multi-step workflows through autonomous action," Sheri said. "That rapid adoption is occurring not just in retail, but we’re seeing it across other industries: travel, fashion, grocery, legal services, healthcare, logistics, supply chain manufacturing, and even education. It’s a big conversation and everyone’s trying to figure out how to best integrate it into their business."

To round out Cushing Terrell's 2026 promotion announcements, please join us in celebrating the five individuals recently elevated to principal leadership roles (the highest tier of ownership in the firm): Kara Eberle-Lott, Josh Hersel, Anthony Houtz, Shawn Pelowitz, and Alex Russell.

With Cushing Terrell since 2011, Kara serves as director of architecture and the firm's Seattle location director. She leads efforts to advance design excellence and innovation while supporting the professional development of approximately 200 architects firmwide. Josh is an architect and director of Cushing Terrell's multifamily residential design group. He has more than 20 years of experience supporting residential clients in addition to leading commercial and hospitality design work. Anthony is a design strategist, architect, and project manager who's been with Cushing Terrell for 19 years, helping organizations translate emerging ideas into practical, research-informed outcomes. Shawn is an architect and director of the government design studio. He has 35 years of experience (11 with Cushing Terrell) in federal design and construction. Alex has been a mechanical engineer with Cushing Terrell for 16 years and now serves as director of energy services and principal-in-charge of the firm's sustainability service sector.

"I'm proud to welcome Kara, Josh, Anthony, Shawn, and Alex to the role of principal at Cushing Terrell," President Greg Matthews said. Across Idaho's Treasure Valley, an explosion in population has contributed to an increase in recreational offerings. In the last year alone, Cushing Terrell has worked on three projects meeting the demand for sports and recreation spaces in the area, while employing adaptive reuse solutions to the builds. In many cases, this means less upfront cost for the client, as the original frame is already in place. It's also a more sustainable construction option and can make use of buildings in need of renovation in ideally populated areas.

What was once an unused horse track has become a 7,000-seat stadium (in its first phase with room for expansion up to 11,000) and home to Boise's first professional soccer team. Across town, JR's Park will be located on Simplot Hill, a beloved landmark that was once home to the Simplot family and has generously been donated to the City of Boise as a 120-acre park outfitted with an amphitheater, hilltop pavilion, tractor shed museum, playground, and much more. Following a hugely successful debut in Meridian, Idaho in 2023, The Flying Pickle's second location in nearby Nampa made smart use of a building that had been vacant for 20 years. It's now been revamped into a bustling pickleball venue and community hub.

Please help us continue our celebration of team member promotions with the announcement of four new associate principals! The group is comprised of Tom Calla, Dane Jorgensen, Sandi Rudy, and Jesse Vigil.

Tom is co-director of our healthcare market and has dedicated the last 23 years at Cushing Terrell to creating spaces that promote healing and wellness. Dane has been with the firm for 17 years, is a structural engineering group leader with expertise spanning several markets, and contributes to mentorship efforts, several communities of practice, and Cushing Terrell's quality management task force. With the firm for 12 years, Sandi is the director of interior design, fulfilling many functions within that team; and is a newly accredited Certified Design Futurist — the first at Cushing Terrell. A 20-year Cushing Terrell veteran, Jesse is an architect, co-director of our residential design studio, and location director for Missoula and southwest Montana. His design focus includes custom homes, hospitality, and resort communities.

"At Cushing Terrell, leadership and ownership are built with intention," President Greg Matthews said. This group is represents professionals in the fields of architecture, engineering, interior design, accounting, business development, and project coordination; and is comprised of individuals from nine regional offices.

These 16 new associates match the record number of associate promotions from 2025, signaling the continued and steady growth of Cushing Terrell, as well as an ongoing prioritization of leadership development.

The Shop! Association 2026 Design Awards have been announced, and we’re pleased to share the remodel of Town & Country Markets in Poulsbo, Washington, has received a Gold award for outstanding supermarket and grocery design!

Working to meet the vision of our long-term client, Cushing Terrell's retail design team partnered with Woodman Construction to complete a full remodel of the store that not only included design updates to every department but also created new spaces to provide a range of culinary experiences for customers.

The grocery store is now outfitted with a classroom and community kitchen, a re-imagined meal inspiration center, a test kitchen, and an outdoor patio, as well as Field House restaurant realized in partnership with renowned chef Ethan Stowell. The restaurant was designed within the store itself and offers inventive food offerings made with seasonal ingredients from the market.

"We had an incredible opportunity with this project to help our client demonstrate the full market-to-table experience through design,” said Kara Eberle-Lott, design lead for the project. “This beloved local grocer is also a destination store where people come from all over the region explore the offerings and to be inspired.”

Congratulations to everyone who had a hand in realizing this project and to our client Town & Country Markets for bringing people amazing food experiences!
