The Montana Heritage Center, which soft opened in December 2025 and held its grand opening celebration in conjunction with the Montana History Festival in June, is featured in CLAD's online journal. In the article, read about the multi-year project that culminated in museum and gallery spaces, archives, a library, an education center, a café, and gathering spaces — all in one 170,000-square-foot building located next to the state capitol in Helena.

The Montana Heritage Center “has already attracted more than 80,000 visitors during its first six months and is expected to become one of Montana's leading cultural destinations,” notes the article.

We’re proud to have been a part of this impactful project, supporting the State of Montana and the Montana Historical Society in their work to bring the state’s history to life. It’s great to see our talented partners Main Street Design, Hunt Design Los Angeles, and Electrosonic highlighted for their collaborative work to make the Montana Heritage Center a highly immersive and experiential cultural destination.

New podcast episode drop! This week, we’re chatting with Interior Design Director Sandi Rudy, who recently became a Certified Design Futurist. We discuss how to identify signals that might inform design and create tangible, data-driven concepts. Sandi also speaks on how she’s used this framework to help tackle challenging situations — such as designing for the future of offices.

"The idea of strategic foresight is what drove the Design Futurist certification," Sandi said. "Strategic foresight is a data-driven practice for developing plausible scenarios to inform long-term planning. There's three key phrases within that statement which break down the importance of design futurism: data-driven, plausible scenarios, and long-term planning. It's these three components that make up strategic foresight, which can be applied broadly to many aspects on our lives, but also works wonderfully for design."

Four Cushing Terrell team members — Nora Bland, Audrey Handelman, Mykayla Hungerford, and Randy Rhoads — had the opportunity to participate in the 2026 Montana Festival, supporting the Design Town City Challenge Series.

The Montana Festival is an annual celebration that brings together entrepreneurs, architects, business leaders, startup operators, innovators, artists, investors, culture creators, designers, community builders, policymakers, and more from across Montana and beyond to catalyze “Made in Montana” ideas, projects, companies, and policy solutions to positively shape the state’s future.

While Nora, Audrey, and Randy served as Design Town charrette facilitators, Mykayla used her visualization talents to create the imagery that showcased the possibilities for five cities: Belgrade, Bozeman, Butte, Great Falls, and Missoula.

The charrette focused on the critical question of how Montana’s cities should grow with the primary goals being intercity collaboration, placemaking, and sustainable growth to support economic development, pedestrian safety, and affordable living while preserving the historical and natural character of Montana towns.

From adaptive reuse projects and a regional trail network to a “once-in-a-generation” infill district, the video below shows some of the conceptual imagery created to showcase the innovative ideas of the cross-disciplinary visionaries who came together to create and collaborate.

“Workdays are busy — often nonstop with meetings and deadlines and prep for yet more meetings,” says Jill. “Finding time to run out for lunch can be tough, and let's face it, not all of us are good about packing a lunch in the morning. But when a full-service café is right around the corner from your desk, or down the hallway with a place to sit and collaborate with colleagues, finding time to recharge the brain and body can be so much easier.”

New in our portfolio: In collaboration with Peterson Lexus in Boise, Idaho, Cushing Terrell designed a renovation and expansion that modernized the automotive dealership’s showroom, customer areas, and service spaces to better serve Boise’s growing market.

The project updated a 1970s building that had been remodeled several times over the years. The primary design goals were to bring the facility into alignment with current Lexus brand standards, improve the building’s functionality, and create an elevated customer experience.

A key decision was to remove the existing canopy at the vehicle service drop-off to make way for additional showroom space and customer service advisor stations. The expanded showroom creates more room for vehicle display while strengthening connections between the showroom, service areas, customer lounge, and offices.

A refreshed façade, as well as new lighting fixtures on an improved low-voltage system, enhanced glazing, and heightened windows were all added to bring in more natural light and give the building a brighter, more contemporary feel. Additionally, cohesive furnishings, custom cabinetry, and signage offer intuitive flow, efficiency, and privacy for customers and employees.
