Continuing our Preservation Month celebration, we’re recognizing team members who’ve dedicated their time and expertise to the preservation of historic and culturally significant structures.

As such, our next People Passions blog post features Michelle Shoriak, an architectural historian in New Orleans, Louisiana, who considers the story of every material — every brick and shingle — and sees them as moments in history worth preserving. She describes her detailed approach to historic and cultural preservation, her favorite moments as a preservationist, and her passion for traveling and experiencing new places.

In a recent Engineering News-Record article, the construction joint venture of McAlvain Companies, Inc. and Andersen Construction and our local Cushing Terrell design team members spoke to the challenges and solutions of developing the new, ground-up YMCA in downtown Boise, Idaho.

Opening this fall, the new building replaces the original YMCA built in 1968 and will offer a variety of programs and activities for people of all ages.

Delivering integrated, multidisciplinary design starts with building the right teams in the right places. For our Denver studio, this has meant expanding our local in-house capabilities to provide a more comprehensive suite of planning and design expertise for clients across the Front Range.

Over the past two years, our Denver team has grown to include additional engineering and design disciplines while deepening expertise in areas such as retail, civic, multifamily, and affordable housing.

The result is a more connected, collaborative team that can move faster to solve complex challenges, from concept through implementation, alongside our clients. This expansion reflects a continued investment in Denver and in the partnerships that have shaped our work here for more than 15 years.

May is Historic Preservation Month and the perfect time to highlight buildings that not only have historic and cultural relevance but also have been re-envisioned to meet modern needs.

The Little Africa Plaza in Saint Paul, Minnesota, is one such storied building that has seen several incarnations over its 100 years. Once a car dealership during the post-World War I automotive boom, it's now home to the nonprofit group African Economic Development Solutions (AEDS) of Minnesota. The group, along with a team of advocates, saw opportunity in the Art Deco-style red-brick building and took on the project to transform it into a hub for celebrating and supporting African culture and entrepreneurship.

Both today and this Saturday, Cushing Terrell architectural historian Michelle Shoriak will lead educational presentations called "Understanding Mortar and the Lime Cycle" at the New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Festival. Attendees can learn from Michelle and other trade experts throughout the day from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m.

"The Preservation Trades Tent, located inside the Folk Life Village, focuses on historic building trades and materials and aims to educate festival-goers on the importance of preserving the built environment." Michelle explained. "This year, there's an additional focus on workforce development with the recent introduction of the Bridge to Crafts Careers (B2CC) program, a New Orleans-based initiative led by the World Monuments Fund and Preservation Resource Center that provides individuals with specialized training in historic building trades. B2CC attendees will gain experience mixing mortar, laying bricks, applying plaster, repairing marble, and restoring cast and wrought iron."

We’re thrilled to have played a part in setting the stage for professional soccer in Idaho! To help transform the historic Les Bois Park horse racing facility into a professional soccer stadium, the Cushing Terrell team brought its architectural, structural engineering, and interior design capabilities to the endeavor.

The goal of the adaptive reuse project was to modernize and expand the existing structures, develop new spaces and systems necessary to support new uses, and make accessibility improvements to create world-class amenities for the soccer players and their fans.

The stadium is now home to Boise Pro Soccer's USL League One men’s team; and in the fall of 2027, a USL Super League women’s team will join them. The FIFA-certified facility will be soccer-focused, with plans to redevelop all 27 acres of the Ada County, Idaho-owned site into a dynamic mixed-use venue over several phases.

“This site has a lot of history and being able to continue its legacy while transforming it into something new through adaptive reuse is really rewarding,” said Allison Clark, a Cushing Terrell design professional who supported the project. “The site is taking on a new life and will be enjoyed by new generations of people, inspiring kids across the Treasure Valley to take up soccer.”

Congratulations to Athletic Club Boise, and a big thank you to our exceptional project partners Okland Construction and Engineering Consultants, Inc.!

For a critical access hospital in Haines, Alaska, the design of two entry sequences and a long-term care courtyard will create defining features for the facility that enhance the overall patient experience with a variety of spaces where people can connect with nature while on their healing journey.

“Located in the northern part of Alaska’s Inside Passage, Haines is known for its fjords, glaciers, and lush temperate rainforest,” said Christopher Muir with Cushing Terrell’s landscape architecture team. “The beauty of nature here is abundant, and people hold a great affinity for the outdoors. Thus, our landscape architecture concepts for the project take inspiration from this surrounding environment with an eye to best utilizing what’s already in place.”

In honor of Earth Day, we’re celebrating how community and collaboration support the development of holistic, sustainable design solutions.

"Ultimately, the power of sustainability lies in people and the power of our collective actions," said Ashleigh Powell, director of sustainability at Cushing Terrell. "By investing in knowledge and cultivating a strong sense of community, we turn intent into impact — creating resilient, healthy, and sustainable environments that serve people today and strengthen communities for the future."

On our blog, Ashleigh speaks to some of our recent projects that exemplify this collaboration and demonstrate how we can harness our energy and expertise, along with the dedication of our clients, to realize a better built environment.

Take a peek at the projects behind our Earth Day series and what it means to be truly “plugged in.”

The renovation of Town & Country Markets in Poulsbo, Washington, not only revamped every department in the store but also created space for a collection of new experiences for its customers.

To broaden the store’s appeal, features such as a classroom and community kitchen were incorporated as well as a reimagined meal inspiration center, a test kitchen, and an outdoor patio. "The biggest change was creating a restaurant within the store that utilizes regional ingredients from MiddleField Farm on Bainbridge Island, Town & Country Markets' organic farm," said project lead Kara Eberle-Lott.

True to their vision of nourishing the quality of life, this expansion into dining and community spaces reflects the grocer’s continued commitment to serving customers holistically.
