We have so much to be thankful for and sometimes don’t even realize it. If you have a roof over your head, a comfortable place to sleep, running water, food in your kitchen, power to generate your home and have the privilege of sharing your home with the people you love, count your blessings. These are things that people in Western Carolina, parts of TN, FL and GA are without right now and may for the foreseeable future. Hurricane Helene has devastated so many.
Social media is a funny thing, a double edge sword of sorts. On the one hand, I love seeing beautiful pictures of interiors and being inspired by these images. On the other hand, it can make us feel like our home may be less than or not enough. I don’t think there is anything wrong with wanting a beautiful, welcoming place to call home. In fact, I want that myself. But let’s not forget how beautiful it is that our lights turn on with the flick of a switch, that we can adjust the air/heat, keep our food cold and easily warm it, that water runs through our home by turning on a faucet and a roof keeps out the rain and other elements. And no matter how it is decorated, our homes hold the ones we love and offer a sanctuary from this sometimes heartbreaking world.
Sometimes the most beautiful gifts are the ones we take for granted everyday. When you turn on the lights in your kitchen (even if you are wanting to replace your kitchen pendants), know that there are people who would love to be able to light their home or even have a space to call home. If you were able to make breakfast for your children and feed them a warm meal before heading off to school know that others are waiting in line for hours for groceries.
Black Mountain and the surrounding areas hold a special place in our hearts. My children have gone to camp in this area for over a decade and the impact on their lives has been profound. Please pray for these communities and all those affected by hurricane Helene. They have a long road ahead. If you are able, consider donating to groups like as they are doing important work to help these communities get back on their feet.
