Here’s what’s happening over here. Our Social Media Manager is just me — Sus— juggling posting with client meetings and contractor calls, design team discussions, paint colors, rug options, light fixtures, and oh yeah moving kids out of college and keeping up with work outs and feeding the people and pulling ticks off the dog after a Mother’s Day family hike. The SYH Procurement team made our semi-annual pilgrimage to the furniture markets in two weeks ago now, and came home filled up with inspo and also to-do’s, leaving no time til now to put together a retrospective reel. Anyone else laugh when they hear “algorithm” and just click “Post” when they can and get back to the real stuff? Let’s all resolve to keep the main thing the main thing together, how about? Not the posting, but the work, the loveliness, and the team that makes it happen. Let’s do design — and everything — differently.

And now for a corner I’ve wanted to photograph since before construction began on this recently completed kitchen we dubbed Park and Palette. Way back last spring at , at their rather hard-to-find and therefore extra-special feeling , we found and immediately became obsessed. Handcrafted in Kentucky, these everyday objects are nothing short of art. Last fall, when we were designing Park and Palette, we knew we wanted to mount the clients’ rolling pin and cutting board, just as they had always been mounted, albeit in a tucked away, out-of-sight spot. And it was also clear a heavily used kitchen like this needed a broom and dustpan within easy reach. Thus these functional and beautiful objects were part of the design from its earliest stages. The light streaming in, combined with the beauty of everyday objects, is distinctly Shaker, and caught our hearts. Kitchens, of course, are at their best just that: beautiful backdrops for everyday life. The open counter next to this corner, dedicated to small appliances that live proudly out for all to see, makes go-to things accessible, looking intentional rather than tolerated. At SYH, we hold beauty and function equally valuable, and we believe that balance makes for the best homes.

Team SYH is back from market and full of inspiration!

But before we share all that fun stuff, here's more of that kitchen reno y'all are loving so much! The tall shuttered windows stayed from the Before — too lovely to touch, and the plants needed them — so we tucked drawers beneath each one to try to capture the space for additional function. In general, we wanted to modernize the effect (aesthetic and usability) but let the home's traditional bones lead: crown molding, original hardwood floors, grasscloth wainscoting. The palette emerged, navy below, crisp white above, a two-tone strategy that grounds the color while drawing the eye upward, making a fairly modestly sized kitchen feel larger than it is. Against variably-sized white tile with dark grout, it delivers exactly the punch the clients wanted — vibrant and traditional at once, right at home in an older Bloomington house and unlike anyone else's kitchen.

Another kitchen in the books for 2026! These clients gave us something rarer and more valuable than a big budget or a blank slate: they gave us their complete trust. They knew what they liked (their nightly conversations over dishes, and their flame-colored le creuset collection), told us clearly, and got out of the way. They didn’t even visit the stone yard to approve the countertop slab with us — they looked at our photos, trusted our read, and said yes. That kind of confidence is what allows great design to happen. More than square footage or investment level or architectural constraints, trust is the ingredient that makes a kitchen beautiful. This audio made us laugh! But for real, though: Trust the Process! It’s the perfect mantra for this (and who’s kidding, every) stage of the process, and our client has mastered it! She is a joy, and the proof of her letting go and trusting us is in how fun our collaboration has been up til now, and will also be in the outcome, we have no doubt. This whole house remodel and furniture/decor project on the east side of Bloomington is underway now and should be done later this year. We are all so excited to see it take shape. These are AI renderings from our 3-D model, chosen because they highlight a few of the arches we are including in this design. Arches, like any design element (or maybe anything in life) have a tipping point after which you’ve done too much of a good thing. We think we’ve hit the perfect echo of a curve trailing through this beauty of a home. 💙

This morning’s SYH staff meeting is brought to you by with and coffee and a brand new jaw-droppingly charming kitchen! What a joy when one of our own gets to transform her own space. Our talented staff architect Leslie Noggle is the queen of quirk, an animal whisperer, and never met a color of the rainbow she didn’t love. We want to stay in her kitchen all day.

The trees in our corner of the midwest are in full bloom, and all the color and new life is palpable, imbuing our designs at SYH with even more contrast and color than usual. And you know what comes with all the budding and hope and newness: lake season!

This A-frame lake retreat for an Indianapolis family is one of our favorites. The clients needed a weekend house that could handle three grown sons and a rotating cast of grand-dogs and significant others, and also feel serene and beautiful. We made it both indestructible and genuinely lovely, which is a design challenge we are here for.

We kept what was worth keeping — the original pine ceiling, the stone fireplace, an heirloom dining set — and transformed what wasn't working. A dark, awkward kitchen is now bright and open, with a new window looking straight out to the lake and a layout built for a crowd. The bathroom got a full refresh with soft green tile that pulls the lake palette right inside. And then there's the custom reading nook, built to fit a full mattress, tucked in to catch the afternoon sun, perfect for a book or an extra guest. It's the kind of detail that makes a vacation home feel worth the schlep.

This one was even featured in and Livingetc -- not bad for a rehabbed A-frame in the midwest.

If you've been dreaming about what your lake house could be, or any home, really — we'd love to talk.
