If you’re looking to replace your old flooring with some new hardwood, here are five things you should know:

1. Gloss – The lower the gloss, the lower the possibility that your newly installed hardwood will show everyday wear and tear. With a highly glossed product, you will see more scuffs and scratches.

2. Grain – If you want a hardwood with a high grain visual, you should choose an oak or hickory. If you want something subtle in grain, we suggest a smooth exotic or a domestic maple.

3. Texture – Choosing a product with a hand scraped look or other slight distressing techniques can help break up the flooring and provide a “mask” for imperfections.

4. Color – A lighter to mid-tone color choice will show scratches less than a darker color.

5. Hardness – Hardwood is ranked by something known as the Janka scale; however, hardness can be increased with treatments engineered by the manufacturers, if desired.
