Altering the front-facing gable of this 1890s cottage allowed for a cohesive elevation to emerge that also created more usable third floor living space to better meet our client’s lifestyle needs. See before and after photos!

In only a handful of days, our River House and its guest cottage were sold. It looks as striking today as it did when it was designed and built for our clients in 2008. We wish them and the new owners every happiness!

More POU Chapel News! JSA is very pleased to announce AIA CT, in conjunction with Preservation CT, has recognized the Pine Orchard Union Chapel with its 2022 Elizabeth Mills Brown Merit Award! The award recognizes design excellence in the restoration and reuse of historic structures. The jury commented that the chapel is a “sweet, lovely building that has been carefully preserved. Replacement of the missing details gives the building so much character.” We are thrilled the chapel has once more taken pride of place in the Pine Orchard community!

A three-year-long effort spearheaded by Jennifer Aniskovich and members of the Pine Orchard Union Chapel Association, building and fundraising committees, donors, and volunteers, to preserve the historic Pine Orchard Union Chapel has been fully realized.

Listed on the National Register of Historic Places since 2000, the 125-year-old chapel was designed in 1897 by Brown & Berger of New Haven in the Queen Anne style. It is one of the few remaining historic houses of worship built along the Connecticut shoreline in the 19th century for summer residents.

The extensive preservation project included: lifting the structure 5 feet off the ground to repair and reinforce the main floor framing system, replacing the roof, restoring the cupola, rebuilding the rear entry, replacing contemporary lighting fixtures with custom period chandeliers, as well as replacing some windows and doors, and performing upgrades to utilities.

JSA is pleased to have been a member of the all-volunteer building committee with James Elmasry, AIA; Nick Fisher of Fischer Excavating; Vin Giordano, Jr. of Giordano Construction; Al Lombardi of Michael Horton Associates; Bob Massey, Jr. of Massey’s Plate Glass and Aluminum; and Rick Ross of Westmount Development Group.

JSA is happy to announce the 2022 AIA Connecticut Alice Washburn jury honored the Linden Shore Retreat with its “Excellence in New Construction” award! The jury recognized the cottage for its “well-proportioned, clean, simple lines (and) highly efficient use of space and effective daylighting.”
