Katara Towers is an extraordinary piece of architecture, bringing together a monumental scale with forms inspired by the landscape and culture of Qatar. Seeing the towers take shape was a reminder of just how ambitious this project was from the beginning.

I feel incredibly honored to have been invited to contribute as one of the artists whose work became part of this remarkable hotel. To see the finished architecture and understand how many artists, designers, and craftspeople came together to create this experience is something I am deeply grateful to have been part of.

It's actually quite difficult to simply call Katara Towers a hotel.

The architecture, interiors, art and attention to detail come together to create something that feels entirely its own. Every element has been thoughtfully considered, from the sweeping forms of the building to the materials and artwork throughout the guest spaces.

Being included among the artists commissioned for such a monumental achievement in architecture and design was a true honor. I was overwhelmed by the sense of gratitude when I saw the collection of artists involved in the project and realized that I was one of them.

From an image of the desert landscape to hundreds of individually crafted clay tiles.

The inspiration for Curved Winds came from the movement created by wind across the desert sands. I had already been exploring this design in my studio when the opportunity to create work for Katara Towers came along, and it felt remarkably suited to the project's connection to the winds and sand dunes of Qatar.

Each tile was individually handcrafted, creating a textured surface that reflects the ever-changing movement of the desert landscape. Seeing the idea develop from the studio into a permanent part of this extraordinary project was incredibly rewarding.

For this project, I transformed the flowing forms of an aerial image of a desert dune into individually handcrafted clay tiles. The design was inspired by the way wind continuously reshapes the surface of the sand, creating patterns that are constantly changing.

The finished work is a small interpretation of that larger landscape, with each tile capturing part of the movement and texture of the dune.

I was especially honored to see this work selected for Katara Towers and to have it become part of the experience for guests staying in the hotel.

From the studio to the guest rooms of Katara Towers.

One of the most meaningful parts of this project was seeing Curved Winds in its final setting. The individually handcrafted tiles were placed throughout the guest rooms, allowing each guest to experience a portion of the larger design.

The concept was inspired by the ever-shifting sands of Qatar and the movement of wind across the dunes. Each room contains a piece of the larger image, so that the complete dune emerges only through the collective experience of the guests.

It was an incredible honor to see the work become part of such a significant project.

Curved Winds: Created for Katara Towers, Qatar.

This piece began with the simple observation of how wind transforms the surface of desert sand. That movement became the inspiration for a series of individually handcrafted clay tiles, each one contributing to a larger image inspired by an aerial view of a Qatari dune.

I was incredibly grateful to see this design, which had already been developing in my studio, find such a natural place within the architecture and design of Katara Towers.

The interiors were designed with the same attention to form, texture, movement, and connection to the surrounding landscape that can be seen throughout the project. Warm wood, soft curves, natural materials, and carefully selected artwork come together to create an incredibly considered environment.

It was a privilege to see Curved Winds become part of these spaces and to know that the work would be experienced by guests from around the world.

Being part of the artistic collection for a project of this scale is something I feel incredibly proud and grateful for.

Seeing the work installed is always a special moment.

After so much time spent developing and handcrafting each individual tile in the studio, there is something very meaningful about seeing the finished piece become part of its intended environment.

For Curved Winds, that environment was Katara Towers in Qatar, a project inspired by the country's landscape and defined by extraordinary architecture and design.

The sculpture was created to reflect the movement of wind across the desert sands, and seeing those forms translated into the guest rooms made the connection between the artwork, the architecture and the landscape especially meaningful.

A project I will always be incredibly grateful to have been part of.

Katara Towers brought together an extraordinary collection of architects, designers, artists and craftspeople, each contributing to an ambitious vision on a truly monumental scale.

For me, being invited to contribute Curved Winds was an incredible opportunity to bring a design that had been developing in my studio into a project so closely connected to the winds, sand, and landscape of Qatar.

Seeing the completed spaces and the work in its final setting left me with an overwhelming sense of pride and gratitude. It is difficult to even call this simply a hotel. It truly feels like its own species of building.

Every piece of land holds a story.

Some projects begin with a commission, and others begin with listening.

This public art series started with a question: What story does this land want to tell?

I applied for this project as a public art grant opportunity, knowing the artwork needed to become more than a visual landmark. It needed to honor the people and history that shaped this place long before the newest buildings arrived.

Public art has the power to preserve memory, connect generations, and remind us that every landscape carries stories worth remembering. It was an honor to work on this project and help translate history into a visual story of the land.
