Abeadaday!
The artists in China have a long history of being able to capture the true essence of what inspires their creations. This strand of beads is a good example of this. What look like round, white Jade beads are actually made of glass. White Jade is considered the purest of all Jades, and although most folks aspire to have some, it is often expensive and difficult to obtain. This old strand of Peking glass embodies it well.

Abeadaday!
Old European trade beads have found their way into cultures around the world. First through the barter system during the age of colonial expansion (15-1900’s). Then they often get passed on to family, friends and community members locally. Eventually, many end up back in the market where collectors and crafters purchase them. This old grouping could tell many stories about its journey.

Abeadaday!
The cicada (chan) is known to spend years underground in darkness before shedding its earthly shell to emerge as a winged creature. Because of this unique life cycle, it has been revered in China since ancient days. The lore of this auspicious creature is seen as a sign of rebirth and immortality, it also embodies the five core virtues: elegance, loftiness, incorruptibly, frugality and trustworthiness. This old set of carved Jade pieces pay homage to this special being.

Abeadaday!
Despite being called “Dutch flag” beads, these glass beads were made by Italian artists in Murano. Traded into Africa and the Americas in the 1800’s by early settlers (including the Dutch), beads like these have been popular in many cultures.
The red, white and blue motif was a common pattern associated with many elements of that time.

India has been known for millennia as “the land of beads.” For centuries millions of stone and glass beads have been made there and distributed through the trade routes around the world. These large, vintage, wound-glass beads are another example of the vast artistic expression that comes from the bead makers who call this place home.

These old clay pieces are used as beads, but they were originally produced for an alternative purpose. Known as spindle whorls, they were made to function as a fly-wheel on a long wooden spindle to maintain inertia while spinning raw fiber into twisted thread. This batch comes from South America and date back many centuries.

Abeadaday!
Venetian glass beads were made by the millions during the last few centuries. They were a source of currency in the ever expanding colonial trade networks as well as prestigious pieces of adornment for the social elites. This mixed strand shows some of the many varieties made using the lamp-work technique.
