On Metaphor...

A vessel can be more than an object. It can become a metaphor for what we carry, what we preserve, and what we hold.

Ceramic vessels are rich with metaphor and association. They suggest cultural history, sustenance, fertility, plenty, the human body, and holding of any kind. These complex resonances reward contemplation.”

Perhaps the most interesting question is not simply what a vessel holds, but what it comes to represent.

On Invitation...

Like a good poem, painting, or musical phrase, the vessels invite a moment of pause and contemplation.

They are not simply objects to be observed, but evocations of memory, feeling, and introspection -- and perhaps revealing something within ourselves that has been waiting to be noticed.

Having Alex in the studio this summer was a real pleasure—and an immense help. He jumped into whatever needed doing, kept things moving, and brought a good sense of humor to the inevitable mess and mayhem of a pottery studio.

There was plenty of clay, a fair amount of heavy lifting, and hopefully a few useful things learned along the way.

Thanks, Alex, for all your help and for making the summer in the studio a lot more fun. You’ll be missed! 🏺

On Inflection...

The language of form remains one of clay's great mysteries.

How is it that one curve evokes longing, another inspires reverence, while a seemingly similar one says nothing at all?

It's a question that keeps me returning to the wheel. If I ever learn the answer, I may no longer need to make pots.

My first-ever Advanced Sectional Throwing Workshop was an unforgettable week filled with ambitious forms, thoughtful conversations, creative breakthroughs, and plenty of laughter.
