We've been seeing this fungus on many of the cypress trees. Finally looked it up: Phaeolus schweinitzii, commonly known as Dyer's Polypore

As its common name suggests, the dyer's polypore is an excellent natural source of green, yellow, gold, or brown dye, depending on the material dyed and the mordant used. Calling any of my natural dyer friends... have any of you ever used this? Show us examples!

If you saw our reel from yesterday (and even if not), I wanted to talk a little more about this. While the stone is beautiful and inspirational for a gorgeous neutral colorway (I'm thinking on a linen yarn base) it is also incredibly cool and geologically significant.

The Apoplystra Folds are a series of rock formations characterized by their vivid colors and intricate patterns. These folded rocks are the result of the intense geological forces of the African and Eurasian plate colliding 50 million years ago. This process resulted in the unique, angular geological formations seen today.

The Mediterranean felt like an overfull bathtub last night. And this morning the road (where it wasn't falling into the sea) was covered in stones that had been tossed there by the waves!!

Currently on Crete, accidentally designing yarn in my head every 5 minutes.
I swear I came here to relax… but then the sea looks like this and my brain goes: “Okay but what if that was a moody tonal or a gradient-tipped fade or a sublime gradient cake?”

I’m thinking this trip might turn into a Aegean Collection — colorways inspired by the landscapes, textures, and light from this island I love.

Follow along — I’ll be sharing more Crete-inspired color ideas before I head back to the dye pots in March.
