The basket is the summer house’s most reliable resident — up before everyone, useful all day, still looking good at dinner. It predates pottery, has survived every trend, and lined the beamed kitchen ceiling of Martha Stewart’s Connecticut farmhouse long before people referred to her as just Martha. Erin Pollard of Underwater Weaving found basketry by serendipity — missing calls because she was in the garden twisting vines, feeling for the first time the hand-brain connection she hadn’t known was missing. Her Maine and New York-based studio works in rattan sourced from Southeast Asia, soaked and woven on the Shaker premise that beauty lives in the things we use daily. The Folk Fleur collection is what happened when she and PORTA shared a brief: her shapes, our colour. From this came a series of workhorse beauties.
