ULTIMATE BEGINNER BASIL CARE GUIDE
☀️ LIGHT
Basil is a sun-loving herb. Give it the brightest location possible with 6-8+ hours of direct sun daily. Morning sun is fantastic, a few hours of afternoon sun is usually fine, if outdoors. A grow light also works.
💧 WATER
Keep soil evenly moist but never soggy. Water thoroughly until water drains from the bottom, then allow the top 1-2 inches of soil to dry before watering again. Basil hates sitting in constantly wet soil. Distilled water or rainwater is best.
⬇️ BOTTOM WATERING
Bottom watering is the key to basil. Place the pot in a tray of water for 15-45 minutes and allow the soil to absorb moisture from below, then discard excess water.
🪴 THE BEST SOIL MIX
Basil grows best in a rich, airy, moisture-retentive soil that still drains well.
Try:
• 2 parts high-quality potting soil
• 1 part coco coir or peat moss
• 1 part perlite or pumice
This gives basil the perfect balance of moisture retention, airflow, and drainage for fast root growth.
🌱 FERTILIZER
Basil is a heavy feeder compared to many herbs. Feed every 2-4 weeks during active growth with a balanced liquid fertilizer such as 3-3-3, 5-5-5, or 10-10-10 diluted according to label directions. Fish emulsion, kelp fertilizer, and organic all-purpose fertilizers also work well.
Avoid overfertilizing, which can produce huge leaves with weaker flavor.
🌡️ TEMPERATURE
Basil thrives between 70-90°F. Growth slows below 60°F and temperatures below 50°F can cause damage. Frost will kill it.
💦 HUMIDITY
Basil appreciates moderate humidity. Grouping plants together can naturally increase humidity levels. Sunny kitchens, bathrooms, patios, and greenhouses are often ideal environments.
✂️ PRUNING
The secret to giant basil plants is pruning. Instead of harvesting individual leaves, cut stems just above a pair of leaves. Every cut creates two new branches, resulting in a fuller, bushier plant with dramatically more harvests.
🌸 REMOVE FLOWERS
As soon as flower buds appear, pinch them off. Flowering signals the plant to start making seeds instead of leaves. Removing flowers keeps basil producing tender, flavorful foliage for much longer.
