ULTIMATE BEGINNER BASIL CARE GUIDE
☀️ LIGHT
Basil is a sun-loving herb. Give it the brightest location possible with 6-8+ hours of direct sun daily. Morning sun is fantastic, a few hours of afternoon sun is usually fine, if outdoors. A grow light also works.
💧 WATER
Keep soil evenly moist but never soggy. Water thoroughly until water drains from the bottom, then allow the top 1-2 inches of soil to dry before watering again. Basil hates sitting in constantly wet soil. Distilled water or rainwater is best.
⬇️ BOTTOM WATERING
Bottom watering is the key to basil. Place the pot in a tray of water for 15-45 minutes and allow the soil to absorb moisture from below, then discard excess water.
🪴 THE BEST SOIL MIX
Basil grows best in a rich, airy, moisture-retentive soil that still drains well.
Try:
• 2 parts high-quality potting soil
• 1 part coco coir or peat moss
• 1 part perlite or pumice
This gives basil the perfect balance of moisture retention, airflow, and drainage for fast root growth.
🌱 FERTILIZER
Basil is a heavy feeder compared to many herbs. Feed every 2-4 weeks during active growth with a balanced liquid fertilizer such as 3-3-3, 5-5-5, or 10-10-10 diluted according to label directions. Fish emulsion, kelp fertilizer, and organic all-purpose fertilizers also work well.
Avoid overfertilizing, which can produce huge leaves with weaker flavor.
🌡️ TEMPERATURE
Basil thrives between 70-90°F. Growth slows below 60°F and temperatures below 50°F can cause damage. Frost will kill it.
💦 HUMIDITY
Basil appreciates moderate humidity. Grouping plants together can naturally increase humidity levels. Sunny kitchens, bathrooms, patios, and greenhouses are often ideal environments.
✂️ PRUNING
The secret to giant basil plants is pruning. Instead of harvesting individual leaves, cut stems just above a pair of leaves. Every cut creates two new branches, resulting in a fuller, bushier plant with dramatically more harvests.
🌸 REMOVE FLOWERS
As soon as flower buds appear, pinch them off. Flowering signals the plant to start making seeds instead of leaves. Removing flowers keeps basil producing tender, flavorful foliage for much longer.

ULTIMATE FERN CARE GUIDE:
☀️ LIGHT:
Ferns need BRIGHT light for most of the day to stay full and healthy.
Bright indirect light is ideal! I think near a bright window where the plant can “see” the sky most of the day.
Gentle direct morning sun is usually completely fine, and a small amount of softer late afternoon sun can also work indoors. The main thing to avoid is intense hot midday sun blasting the leaves for hours, especially through west-facing windows.
Outside, ferns often do amazing in bright shade or filtered light in warmer climates because outdoor shade is still much brighter than most indoor spaces.
Too little light causes sparse weak growth, stretched fronds, and slower recovery.
💧 WATER:
Keep the soil lightly moist, not soaking wet and not bone dry.
A good way to think about it: the soil should feel like a wrung-out sponge.
If you stick your finger into the soil, it should feel slightly cool and damp, but you should NOT be able to squeeze water out of it.
Water again once the very top layer starts feeling slightly dry, before the entire pot dries out. Use distilled water or rain water only.
🌫️ HUMIDITY:
Ferns love humid air because their thin leaves lose moisture quickly.
One of the easiest ways to increase humidity is grouping plants together. Plants naturally release moisture into the air through transpiration, so when multiple plants sit close together, they create a slightly more humid microclimate around themselves.
Sunny bathrooms and kitchens also work well because steam from showers, sinks, and cooking naturally raises air moisture levels throughout the day. And if your home has very dry air from AC or heaters, a humidifier helps by continuously adding moisture back into the air around the plant.

🦉Bird’s Nest Fern
• Bright indirect light is best, but it can handle some gentle direct sun.
• Let the soil dry slightly between waterings.
• Never water directly into the center crown. Alwayswater around the base instead.
• Loves humidity and warmer rooms.
🪴Cast Iron Plant
• Handles low light, bright indirect light, and some direct sun.
• Let the soil dry between waterings.
• Very low maintenance and forgiving.
🕷️Spider Plant
• Likes bright indirect light but adapts well to lower light or some direct sun.
• Let the soil dry between waterings.
• Brown tips can happen from dry air, tap water minerals, or inconsistent waterings.
🌵Ric Rac Cactus
• Bright indirect light is ideal, but it can handle some direct sun once acclimated.
• Let the soil dry between waterings.

ULTIMATE PEACE LILY CARE GUIDE 🪴

🌞Light:

Peace lilies need bright, indirect, all day sunlight to thrive! In the wild, they grow on the shaded rainforest floor, so too much direct sun will burn their leaves.
However, if you put them in a dark spot, they cannot properly complete photosynthesis, and they will stop producing growth. Find a spot near a window with filtered light or a few feet away from a very sunny window. I

💦Water

Peace lilies stay upright through internal water pressure. Because their large leaves lose moisture rapidly, the root system has to constantly pull water upward to maintain them. The catch is that while the soil needs to stay damp to support this, the roots are highly prone to rot. If the soil stays saturated, oxygen gets cut off, the roots fail, and the plant collapses.
Keep plant lightly moist. Also, skip the tap water! Use distilled water or rainwater instead.

🪏Soil

Because the roots require a perfect harmony of moisture retention and accesss to oxygen, regular indoor potting soil will cause them to fail over time.
Mixing standard potting soil with a generous amount of perlite and orchid bark creates the necessary oxygen pockets while keeping the environment damp but not muddy.

🪴Pot

A container with excellent drainage holes is absolutely non-negotiable. Terracotta is highly recommended for peace lilies because the clay is porous meaning that it pulls excess moisture away from the roots and helps prevent root rot.

🍴Feeding

Peace lilies are not heavy feeders, and over-fertilizing will quickly burn the roots and leaves. Only feed them in spring and summer. Use a balanced indoor plant fertilizer diluted to half strength, and apply it only once a month. Skip it entirely in the winter and fall.

😶‍🌫️Humidity

These plants are from tropical rainforests, they thrive on moisture and warm temperatures. Standard indoor heating and air conditioning dry out the air completely, forcing the plant to sweat out moisture faster than its roots can physically keep up. Keep them away from drafts and vents, and try to keep them in a naturally humid zone (like a bathroom or a kitchen)

That Cala Lily was grown to die on you but here’s how to stop it:

1. Light and Placement
This is the most important part. Calla lilies need a good amount of light to trigger those beautiful blooms, but they can’t handle extreme heat. Give them 4 to 6 hours of direct morning sun, followed by shade or filtered light in the afternoon.

2. Water and Soil
Calla lilies like moisture, but they hate sitting in a puddle.

Soil: Use a rich, organic potting mix that drains well. If you are planting in the ground, mix in some compost.

Watering: Keep the soil consistently damp, like a wrung-out sponge. Water thoroughly whenever the top inch of soil feels dry to the touch.

Warning Sign: If the leaves start turning yellow and wilted, the soil is likely too wet. If the stems start drooping, it needs a drink.

3. Feeding and Maintenance
Because they work hard to produce flowers, they appreciate a little extra fuel during the warm months.

Fertilizer: Feed them once a month during the spring and summer with a balanced liquid fertilizer. Stop feeding them entirely once the blooming season ends in late summer.

Pruning: You don’t need to prune them. Just snip off any dead flowers or yellow leaves at the base of the stem to keep the plant looking clean.

4. Dormancy
Calla lilies cannot grow all year long; they require a period of dormancy to recharge for the next year.

Indoor Plants: In the fall, the leaves will naturally turn yellow and die back. Stop watering completely and move the pot to a cool, dark room for 2 to 3 months. In the spring, bring it back into the morning sun and start watering again.

Outdoor Plants: If your winters get freezing temperatures, dig up the bulbs (rhizomes) in the fall before the first frost. Let them air dry for a few days, then store them in a paper bag with peat moss in a cool, dry place until spring. 🪴
