When I hear the word Autumn it brings to mind peaceful thoughts of family, friends, cool breezes, and the magnificent colors of nature. I suppose I'm not the only one who has ever witnessed first-hand the brilliance of an autumn scene and thought: "Okay, God, now you're just showing off!" I find that same exhilaration when working with materials from nature, as well. One of the first bowls I ever
made was made from a 6-inch cubed blank of ambrosia maple. What is ambrosia maple? Well, at the time I didn't know, and I certainly couldn't tell from the exposed wood on the edges. I bought it anyway with hopes of making something for my awesome folks. When I returned home, I mounted the piece of ambrosia maple on my lathe and began cutting into it. I barely started when I had to stop and say those words again: "Okay, God, now you're just showing off!" It was stunning. While the outside looked plain, hidden within was a treasure of beauty. It's that hidden beauty that turned me on to the turning craft. There's so much beauty hidden in this world, even in a scrap piece of wood that's bound for the burn pile. And for me, the additional delight was seeing the look on other people’s faces when they saw what was coming off my lathe. The interest in my hobby's creations turned into an sincere interest in seeing people own my creations. Thus, along with my wife Mikaela, we've created Turned Autumn Creations! I hope you enjoy the beauty of nature as much as we do!
