I have a mountain of work to catch up on, but unfortunately Mother Nature made the weather way too nice to stay home.

So, I’ll be opening the shop for a few hours today and will be around until about 2 or 3 this afternoon.

Downtown is busy with visitors this weekend, the patios are calling, and Jefferson Street is looking pretty good if I do say so myself. If you’re out enjoying the sunshine, stop in and say hello!

And don’t forget, the Municipal Band plays this evening in Crapo Park. It’s one of my favorite summer traditions and a great way to wrap up a beautiful day.

There are so many things happening in Burlington today!

Normally you’d find me set up at Pride in the Park, but this summer I’ve had to take a step back from setting up at events and focus my energy a little closer to home.

If you’ve never been, Pride in the Park is always a warm, welcoming event, and it’s hard to beat a day in beautiful Crapo Park. Whether you’re attending Pride, River Days, or just enjoying the sunshine, there’s plenty to do around town today.

If you’re out and about, feel free to stop by the shop. We still have a selection of locally made Pride and Ally merch available because supporting the people we love never goes out of style. ❤️

It’s Boat Parade day on Jefferson Street!

I was planning to participate, but unfortunately I got distracted somewhere between “I should get a boat” and “Look, a vintage boat motor!”

So if anyone has a hull, steering wheel, trailer, and a few other minor details, I think we’re about 15% of the way there.

In the meantime, this vintage outboard is available at the shop for anyone who’s considerably more committed to boating than I apparently am.

Happy River Days Boat Parade Day, Burlington! 🚤

We have two original Frank Miller editorial cartoons hanging in the shop right now. Miller spent 30 years drawing for The Des Moines Register and even won a Pulitzer Prize for his work.

What I love about editorial cartoons is that they’re basically social media comments from 50 years ago, except they were usually better researched and hand-drawn.

These originals are tucked into our American History section… although at this point I think “American History section” might describe about 80% of the store. Every old object seems to come with a story. And occasionally, a political opinion.

River Days is about to kick off, and apparently Mother Nature is the opening act.
Seriously, some of the most beautiful skies I’ve seen in a long time, and so far, no rain!
The carnival is lit up, the food vendors are ready, live music is on the schedule, and there are volunteers all over downtown making sure everything is ready to go.
If you’ve been debating whether to come down, take a drive along the riverfront and see these clouds for yourself. Even if the weather keeps us guessing, it’s shaping up to be a beautiful evening in Burlington.
See you at River Days!

Rainy days are dangerous around here.

The dolls get bored, they start reading, and then they start getting ideas.

A collection of Raggedy Ann books came into the shop today, and now the little Raggedy Ann has decided she’d rather go by “Annabelle.” She’s also been carrying around that tiny sword and staring at people a little too long.

I’m sure it’s fine.

Probably.

Well, it wouldn’t be River Days without at least a little rain, right?

Today kicks off Burlington River Days, and while the weather isn’t exactly cooperating this morning, it looks like the worst of it should move through by this evening. Tomorrow’s forecast is looking much friendlier.

One thing I think is easy to forget is that events like this don’t just magically happen. They’re put together by volunteers who spend countless hours planning, organizing, fundraising, setting things up, and crossing their fingers that the weather behaves. They’re giving people they’ve never met a reason to get out of the house, spend time with family and friends, and make some memories.

So when the skies clear, consider heading down to the riverfront this week. Ride a few carnival rides, some live music, watch the boat parade, check out the BBQ competition, or just wander around and enjoy having something fun happening in town.

Burlington is lucky to have people willing to put in the work to make events like this happen. Let’s hope the weather gives them a break.

Today I fine tuned our display for the upcoming 250th anniversary of the signing of the Declaration of Independence. 🇺🇸

It’s not 100% traditional Americana, but I think it still captures the spirit of it.

One of the things I love most about this country is that every person here has their own story, their own experiences, and because of those experiences, different things that matter deeply to them. For some people it’s freedom of speech, for some it’s workers’ rights, faith, equality, marriage, safety, opportunity, voting rights, or simply the freedom to live a quiet life and pursue happiness in their own way.

We don’t all agree on the path forward, but I think most of us want the same basic things this country was founded on:
Life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness.

So this little corner of the shop is a celebration of the people who helped shape America into what it is today, the loud ones, the brave ones, the stubborn ones, the hopeful ones, and the ordinary people who pushed things forward a little at a time.

Also… I may have gone slightly overboard with tiny flags and patriotic decor, but honestly I regret nothing. 😄

If you’ve been in the shop lately, you probably already know I’m running about 47 projects behind schedule. 😅
I’ve got stacks of vintage waiting to be cleaned, displays half-built, and approximately one million ideas fighting for attention at all times. Between end-of-school-year chaos and my constant “SQUIRREL!” moments, things get interesting around here.

Today’s squirrel moment was inspired by the Teddy Bear Picnic happening this Sunday at the Crapo Park Bandshell.

I live close to the Teddy Bear Picnic and every year I think, “I should do something fun for this.” Not officially participate… just contribute a little neighborhood magic. So this morning I finally made this metal “Bear Crossing” sign for the event. 🧸💛

Honestly, I’ve had these blank metal signs sitting around for at least FIVE YEARS waiting for the right idea, so this feels like a victory.

The Teddy Bear Picnic kicks off the summer season for the Burlington Municipal Band, and I genuinely think Music in the Park is one of the most magical old-fashioned traditions our community has. There’s just something about live music drifting through the trees on a summer evening that makes Burlington feel special in a way that’s hard to explain.

I may not always sit at the bandshell itself, but I absolutely love hearing the music from nearby while gardening, walking, or just existing in the neighborhood. It makes the whole area feel alive.

The Teddy Bear Picnic itself is adorable. Kids bring their favorite teddy bears and plushies, there are activity stations and crafts before the concert, and the parade kicks everything off before the music begins. It’s such a wholesome community event.

So if you’re looking for something sweet and nostalgic to do Sunday evening:
🧸 Bring a teddy bear
🎶 Listen to live music
🧺 Pack a picnic
❤️ Enjoy one of Burlington’s best traditions

Don’t forget your lawn chairs and bug spray. 🙂

Forgot to take a before picture… but thankfully this table still had its untouched twin. 🙂

This is what I call a gentle restoration. No heavy sanding, no stripping away every mark of its past. Just a really good cleaning, some careful touch-ups, and a little bit of magic.

I’m usually not aiming for ‘factory perfect’ around here, because honestly, you probably wouldn’t like the price tag that comes with perfection. I’d rather bring pieces back to a place where they’re beautiful, functional, and still allowed to tell their story.

Old furniture should still look like it’s lived a life. Just maybe a little more polished than before.
