If you’ve made it this far, thank you. And more than anything, I hope you’ll take this message to heart.
The number of abandoned and abused animals in our communities is overwhelming, and the organizations and people trying to help them are overcrowded, underfunded and carrying a burden that is simply too great to carry alone.
There are things every one of us can do.
First, something that costs nothing but our time: contact your local, state and national elected officials and demand stronger animal-control and animal-welfare laws—and enforcement of those laws—to protect animals who have no voice of their own.
Support spay and neuter programs for families who may not otherwise be able to afford those services.
Support the rescue organizations doing the hard work every single day. Locally, we know firsthand the work being done by organizations such as the Humane Society of Dickson County, the Humane Societies of Humphreys and Hickman Counties, Proverbs 12:10 Animal Rescue—which also reaches into rural communities without animal control or shelters—and Wags & Walks, among so many others.
These organizations are overwhelmed and underfunded. They need fosters. They need adopters. They need volunteers. And yes, when you are able, they need financial support.
If you can foster or adopt, please do. If you can’t, a donation of money or time is something almost all of us can do.
