Experience number 2 of my 100 Experiences Rural Experiment… and this one is FREE.

Hidden behind the Texas Cotton Gin Museum in Burton is the Indian Creek Nature Area.

It’s two acres of wooded trails, a picnic area, a swing, a wooden bridge, a pollinator garden—and if the creek is running, you might even catch a little waterfall.

What makes it even better?

Volunteers have spent years restoring this land and bringing native plants back.
It’s quiet, simple, and exactly the kind of place you might miss if a local didn’t tell you about it.

OPINION: Three-day weekends are only relaxing if your wife doesn’t have a project. 😂

Jeff has a three-day weekend.

Jeff probably thinks he has a three-day weekend.

I have a list.

And somewhere on that list is getting us a little closer to moving into The Coop so I can turn our current house into another Flown The Coop Stay.

Romantic? Maybe not.

Productive? Absolutely.

Sorry, Jeff. You married a woman with big dreams and a Lowe’s list. 😂

Make Custom Jewelry in Small-Town Texas

And we’re officially off! 1 down. 99 to go.

For my first stop on my mission to find 100 things you can DO—not just see—in Washington County and beyond, I sat down with Tricia Legg, owner of Company Five, for a sweet little permanent bracelet.

And honestly, part of the experience was just that—sitting down.

Looking out the window at downtown Brenham, chatting with Tricia, looking through all the beautiful options, and watching her create a piece just for me.

Tricia has an assortment of fine jewelry that she can custom make during a private appointment, so you’re not simply walking into a store and buying something off the shelf. You get to be part of choosing and creating something personal.

Even better? She can bring the experience to you. Girls’ weekend at an Airbnb? Birthday? Mother-daughter getaway? She can come to your stay and turn jewelry shopping into part of the trip.

THAT is what I’m looking for with this little rural experiment.

Not just places to go.
People to meet. Stories to hear. Things to actually DO.

I have a crazy idea. 💡

I’m setting out to find 100 experiences in Washington County… and BEYOND.

But there’s one rule:
I’m not looking for 100 places to SEE.

I’m looking for 100 things you can actually DO.

Make something. Taste something. Learn something. Get your hands dirty. Meet the person behind the business. Hear a story only a local would know.

Because I believe the best way to experience rural Texas isn’t just to visit it.
It’s to participate in it.

So I’m turning this into a little rural experiment.

Can I find 100 experiences hiding in small-town Texas?

And here’s where it gets interesting…
Some might already be bookable.
Some might be things locals have been doing for generations but never thought of as an “experience.”
And some might not even exist yet.

Maybe we’ll create those together. 👀

I’ll be trying them, sharing them, and adding them to The 100 Experiences Map as I go.

The best thing in a small town probably isn’t on TripAdvisor.

Want to know how I find the really good stuff when I travel?

I ask a local.
Ask the shop owner where she eats dinner.
Ask your Airbnb host what you absolutely shouldn’t miss.
Ask the bartender or the folks at the winery where the locals go.

Because some of the best experiences don’t have a big marketing budget—or hundreds of online reviews.

They’re just the places the locals know.

Apparently, you can still get first-day-of-school nerves at 56. 😂

Today was my first day of the Washington County Chamber Leadership Program, and walking in, I was excited…but also a little nervous.

New people. Team-building exercises. 😬 That whole “what did I sign myself up for?” feeling.

And then I got there.
I met some incredible people, learned more about my own communication style (no surprise—I’m a creative with a strong connective side 😂), and got to experience Camp For All.
And WOW.

Camp For All is intentionally designed so children and adults with challenging illnesses or special needs can experience the fun, freedom, and adventure of camp—without their medical needs or physical limitations defining what they get to do.

Seeing the thought that has gone into creating a place where everyone gets to participate was incredibly moving.

But my biggest takeaway today was this:

You can live somewhere for years and still have so much to learn about your own community.

That’s why getting involved matters.

You meet the people doing incredible things right in your backyard. You learn. You connect. You start seeing opportunities to contribute that you never would have known existed.

I’m really enjoying getting to know Washington County on a deeper level.

First day of “school” complete. ❤️
And I already can’t wait for next month.

Get involved where you live. You might be surprised by what you discover.

What nobody tells you about rural travel…

When we went to the BVI, we learned pretty quickly that “island time” is a REAL thing. 😂

Rural America has its own version.
Your cell service might be spotty.
The local shop might close early because something came up.
Things move a little slower.
And sometimes the schedule is more of a suggestion than a rule.
But maybe… that’s exactly the point.

You stop checking your phone every five minutes.

You talk to the person behind the counter.

You sit on the porch a little longer.

You change your plans because a local tells you about something better.

Rural travel isn’t about everything being perfectly convenient.

It’s about slowing down enough to experience where you actually are.
