I have the most wonderful quilt from my Grammy Allen. It's given me many years of love(I think I was around 10 when Grammy gave it to me-she did that for all of us "Allen" grandkids). The quilt went to Rock-A-Thon (a 24 hour music fundraiser), college, my first apartment, and eventually my own home. It's covered me when I was cold, comforted me when I was sad, and brought a smile to my face whilst resting folded on a chair (the colors are soooo pretty). I'm not even sure Grammy intended it to last THIS long, but it has!
I was sitting up in my sewing room the other day, cup of tea in hand and that quilt on my lap. SO COMFY. I noticed the binding was wearing thin and some of the ties had slipped away. It was then I decided it was time to give a little love back to that quilt. So, I began the task of taking the quilt apart.
Have you ever taken a quilt apart? Here's the steps I've taken:
1. Washed the quilt (gentle cycle, non-agitating machine)
2. carefully snipped hand stitched binding
3.. snipped and seam ripped the binding away from the quilt
4. snipped the backside of the ties, pulled out from the front
5. Took apart the quilt sandwich
6. Pressed the top
And now, I'm stuck or torn or, I don't know...
Do I have it quilted? (I LOVE the drape of the tied quilt) But it will last longer if it's quilted. What would you do?
