Postcard From July…(Part One)

I don’t think we have ever had a busier July! In between construction projects, guests and just summer adventures we did enjoy some quiet moments, but it’s hard to believe July is almost over.
It will take me at least two posts to share!

We live here…

A little recap of our 2026 summer glamping event.
What started as a post-college graduation get together for Nathalie and her friends (Covid, they were all sent home for their last few weeks of senior year and never got to celebrate together) has become an tradition.

It is such a joy to reconnect with these lovely people, watching them all spread their wings while their bond to each other remain strong. The effort they all made to get to Cape Cod in July is no joke!

And here we are…all together again last weekend.

So often I find myself thinking “I need to do this or “I need to fix that” and hosting a party like this definitely gives me that push to get things done.
And my Virgo-self, always striving for perfection, can sometimes distract me from the bigger picture.

Remember this-There is absolutely no better way to find perfection in your home than to fill it with your people!

(Sharing some highlights.)

By Friday, all 16 guests had arrived! They used and enjoyed every inch of our home.

We find that batch drinks are always the easiest for groups this size. Our summer go to is a limeade with Philly-made Stateside vodka.

Behind the scenes!

It wouldn’t be a party without local Cape Cod oysters from the Clam Man. We served 100 of them!

We put some of the guys to work, and they quickly became pros at shucking.

Sparrow hated all the attention…

The Wig set up on the back deck and got the party started! We tried not to pay too much attention to the darkening sky…

G came home from NYC with a plan to cook Panuozzi (Pizza sandwiches).

And they didnt dissapoint!

In true Cape Cod form, in weather changed on a dime.

So we quickly moved to Plan B, and set up the entire party to the covered porch.

We found in years past that a playlist can sometimes fall short. Having a professional who can read the room and match the vibe, from appetizers, to dinner, to rain storms, to sunsets, to late night, was essential.

Hosting can be stressful at times, but my best advice is to not stress the things you cant control. When you’

June, At Last…

Summer Soon…

It’s MDW and the start of the Summer season on the cape (though you would never know by the weather.) It’s historically cold and raw here on Memorial Day, this year is no different.

But, last weekend was perfect, a true taste of Summer. So I took advantage of the beautiful weather, opened the doors in our guest room to make it ready for a season of company!
And it was GOOD!
(I had an assistant.)

Mixing Old and New…

I love old doors. After sharing my outside doors last post, I thought I’d show you my salvaged doors inside.

Once we came to the conclusion that our original cottage couldn’t be saved, I decided that I would save and reuse everything I could, my intention was to make our new-build feel like an old seaside home. The old doors were beautiful, and our contractors weren’t sure why I wouldn’t just buy new doors. I trusted my instinct.

We carefully removed every one of the doors (and jambs) from the original cottage. Then, we sent them over to Dip n Strip in Hyannis. There was a century’s worth of varnish on them that had bubbled over time.

I was so happy to see them restored to their original color. I loved them! Once they were home, I polished them up with clear with Butcher’s Wax which added a warm glow.

Maintaining them is pretty easy, I try and work on one door a month. Using the wax and a soft sponge I apply the wax, then use a cloth to buff/polish and protect the wood. Believe it or not this process takes an entire year to cycle through every door. One door at a time makes the process less daunting!

Although they are a bit quirky and sometimes a little jiggly they feel like “home” to me! I love the pops of warm wood throughout the house and using this original historic component was the perfect compromise to make my new home feel as if it’s been here for a hundred years.

The Best Advice…

Is sometimes that which you don’t take.

I can’t tell you how many people advised us NOT to paint our doors black. (And, especially not our garage doors!)
“You’re on the Cape, pick a pretty color!” “They will be so dark and heavy!”

I have never once regretted it, or in the 20 years we have lived here, thought to change the color!
(We used Farrow and Ball, Black Blue. I love that it looks different, sometimes black and sometimes a deep navy, as light changes and in different areas of our home!)

Regrets, and No Regrets…

We made a lot of mistakes when we were building this house, and we did a few things right. I’m gearing up for a few fixes this season and as I do, I’m looking around and focusing on some of the things that have stood the test of time. That, after twenty years, I still love.
So tonight, I’m sharing my entryway transoms.

We wanted an open-ish floorplan so the rooms and wide hallways would flow but as we were building it was feeling almost too open.

I decided that the entry hall needed quiet boundaries.
It started with the vintage one over our library entry-I bought it years before we built, hoping to incorporate it when we did. Once we installed it I loved the twinkle the leaded glass brought to the entry so I wanted to finish all the surrounding openings with something similar.

I measured and drew sketches and had a local stained glass artist make the new leaded windows for me. I worked with my carpenter to install and build out the trimwork.

I love, to this day, that they created instant intimacy for each area (almost like a whisper!) and they allow all the natural light to flow through the rooms.
They brought so much personality into our entry hall!

Over the next few posts, I’ll share some more things that we did and still love✨
