I’ve been designing homes for more than fifteen years, and these measurements have never let me down.

1. Plan for a 9x12 rug (minimum 8x10) under a king bed. It grounds the space and gives you the soft landing you actually want when you step out of bed.

2. Leave 24” of clearance behind dining chairs. Everyone at the table deserves room to move.

3. Center your artwork at 57” from the floor. When in doubt, go a little lower.

4. Hang your dining pendant so the bottom sits 60” from the floor. Standard table height is 30”, light hangs 30” above it.

5. Keep 14 to 18 inches between your sofa and coffee table. Close enough to reach everything, far enough that the room can breathe.

Mudroom? More like mood room.

The back entry takes more abuse than any other space in the house. Bags dropped, shoes kicked off, hats tossed. We design these spaces to handle all of it without looking like they do. Moody beadboard, a custom bench cushion, built-in storage, and hooks that earn their place. Hard working and good looking. It can be both.

Paws and reflect on this laundry room. 🐾🧺

Every member of this family was accounted for in the design, including the four-legged one. A built-in dog wash station with a handheld sprayer, sorting baskets that roll right out, full-height cabinetry on every wall, a farmhouse sink, and pattern tile underfoot that somehow makes doing laundry feel like less of a chore.

This is what it looks like when utility spaces get the same level of intention as every other room in the house. No afterthoughts. Not one.
