So 6 pm, my plan was to go check on garden plants, shut the greenhouse up and close up the extended run to the chicken coop run. I saw a few plants needing a little water in the garden, so I filled two watering cans with water and took care of that. I figured the entire garden will get watered in the morning so I only needed to give the young plants a little tonight. Then, I noticed the onions needed to be harvested. That wasn’t on my agenda. They were suddenly ready to get pulled. I was afraid to leave them another night so I started pulling and filled a basket piled high. They will stay on the back porch over night. I will need to untie the onions in the workshop, as they are cured by now. Then I’ll tie these up to hang. Most of the ones curing in the workshop now, are red onions. That’s why there’s a lot of white onions now. The red just happened to grow quicker. I will need to trim the leaves off and brush them before putting them in my pantry baskets.
I may try sowing lettuce and spinach seeds right in that bed, instead of growing them to transplant. There are some volunteer dill growing in there and I’ll need that for pickles. Plans don’t always work out in the garden when there’s so much that demands attention. You have to be willing to go with the flow and adapt to the ever changing conditions. It’s close to 7 now and I’m done for the day. Have a good night!

My Stargazer Oriental Lillies are starting to bloom! I bought a pkg if 4 bulbs at Walmart, and three started to grow. I get to enjoy their beauty every day, as I pass by to enter my greenhouse and garden. It is one of my favorite flowers! Not only is it beautiful but it smells lovely too.

🐝🍯9 oz volume jars of 18+ oz of honey wt. ($12)
🐝🍯6 oz volume jars have 13.6-14 oz wt. ($9).

He believes he will have more extraction this year in in September. Jar prices, however, are rising so there could be a small price increase. I ended up finding a small frozen tray of zucchini in the kitchen freezer drawer that still needed sealing, so there are actually 6 bags sealed now, not 5 like this pic. This won’t be the end of them either. I still have two 1 gallon bags in the fridge that are full! 🤣 It’s all good because I add it to all sorts of side dishes, soups and zucchini pizza lasagna.
I water-glassed 30 fresh eggs. They will be good for about 18 mths. I could probably add a few more in this jar but I have another like this to fill if needed. I got tired of rotating so many eggs and I was confusing the hubby in which eggs were the oldest. There’s less to worry about on the counter now, so that will help. The water-glassed
eggs can’t be fried but they can be used in scrambles, baked goods, and can bind ground beef. We’ll use what fresh eggs we end up getting just for frying.

It is official Cucumber Season on our Homestead. Yesterday I harvested 2 Dragon Egg Cukes and chopped them up for a salad. The chickens loved the chopped ends as an evening treat. This morning all of these cucumber beauties were ready to pick. I also got another handful of beans, a handful of basil (most of which I’m attempting to root in water), one large spinach leaf for me and Marigold flowers plus spinach, broccoli and cabbage leaves for the chickens. I chopped a small zucchini, my spinach leaf and some basil and then shredded cheese for a veggie scramble. I ate half this morning and saved half for tomorrow. Although I do make some sweets for us to enjoy, I do try to make healthy meals with fresh veggies. Fresh fruit is also enjoyed from our garden when it is ripe to pick. I need to make more pico de gallo and start to water glass eggs, since our Chickie Girls are now producing more than we can consume. Preserving them for late fall/winter will keep us from buying more then. Although it didn’t make a dent, I blanched 5 cookie trays worth of zucchini yesterday. I need to vacuum pack them today. It’s the perfect day for these chores since there’s pop up thunderstorms. Right now it’s pouring out there!

Good Morning from Carthage, TN! I was out early with the chickens, then watering some young plants. I harvested two more zucchini. I think it’s time to blanch them to freeze. I probably have 15-20 in my fridge. My first 2 Dragon Egg Cucumbers were big enough to harvest this morning. I think I’ll use one in a salad today. I got a qt size bag full of stringless bush beans.I may need to use them up soon because that’s my third bag in the fridge. Picking berries was on my list to do but they were covered in bug/bird netting. I had to remove it off two bushes to harvest about 4 cups worth. I picked a cup of blueberries for my yogurt too. Yum! I decided to check on the several Georgia peaches we still had on the tree and was surprised to find my hubby’s honey bees enjoying them. Oh well! They deserve a sweet treat since my hubby will harvest more honey soon. Wasps and flies joined in but there were mostly honey bees on the peaches. On my walk back from the orchard, I stopped to take some photos of my garden from different angles. It’s always hard to decide which angle is my favorite view. I love them all! I have 3 Dragon Egg Cucumber plants this year. I first grew them in 2023. I found the seed packet and thought I’d try them again. I’ll be harvesting them today.

Here’s some info:
Dragon’s Egg Cucumbers, or Cucumis sativus, have been around for centuries and were first cultivated in India. It is believed that this cucumber was brought to Europe by traders from the Middle East sometime during the 16th century. From there, it spread across much of Europe and eventually reached North America in the early 1800s.

Dragon’s Egg Cucumbers can range from 3 to 4 inches in length. They are known for their sweet-tart flavor, which is enhanced by the crunchy texture of the fruit. The taste has a very slight bitterness, but it is not overpowering. When eaten raw, this cucumber has a juicy and refreshing taste, making it an ideal snack or salad ingredient. Cooked, they can be used in soups, stews, and stir-fries.

I had garlic hanging in the workshop for at least 5 weeks and just removed them. I brushed them and instead of braiding them, this year I just cut them. I harvested some onions ( not even half) and hung them up to cure. I took branches off super large marigold plants and transplanted the branches because hey strayed rooting. It’s been in the 90’s out here so I need to keep an eye on all garden plants. The heat can make them wilt. I transplanted much of my remaining greenhouse plants to beds. I still have a few tomatoes and a couple extra marigold plants which need a home but I may just dig some holes, transplant and see what happens.
